International Day of the Midwife

Midwives play a vital role in our communities, providing lifesaving care to mothers and newborns, supporting safe deliveries, and walking alongside women throughout pregnancy and childbirth.

Join us in celebrating midwives for the critical role they play in building healthier families and communities.

For Catherine, a Health Surveillance Assistant in Machinga, reaching some households meant walking long distances, limiting how many families she could support in a day.

Today, that has changed. With a bicycle, she can travel further, reach more households, and spend more time delivering care instead of getting there.

Through the Fighting Vaccine Preventable Diseases Project, Amref Health Africa, with support from the CF Foundation, has provided 100 Buffalo bicycles to support frontline health workers in Salima and Machinga.

For Catherine, this is not just about transport. It’s about reaching more children with life-saving vaccines, following up with families, and ensuring no one is left behind.

Because access to healthcare should not depend on distance.

Turning commitment into action for maternal health.

Today, SUPREME Copartners, including Amref Health Africa, Unitaid engaged the Deputy Minister of Health, Charles Chilambula,MP to highlight how Unitaid’s $52.5 million investment will tackle pre-eclampsia and maternal anemia, two of the leading causes of maternal deaths.

Led by Amref Health Africa and Clinton Health Access Initiative, the SUPREME initiative is focused on closing the gap between lifesaving interventions and access to care for women who need them most.

The Deputy Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to reducing maternal mortality to less than 70 per 100,000 live births.
Because no woman should die from preventable causes.

What does it really take to improve maternal health outcomes?

Today, at the SUPREME Codesign Workshop, stakeholders came together to explore this important question, unpacking the barriers that prevent women from accessing care for pre-eclampsia and maternal anemia.

From health system challenges to community realities, the discussions will help shape solutions that truly respond to women’s needs.

Because the best solutions start with the right questions. Today, we heard directly from a community member who shared her lived experiences, alongside practitioners who brought invaluable frontline insights into the conversation.

Day 1 of the SUPREME Project Codesign Workshop brought together key stakeholders to build a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities in addressing pre-eclampsia and maternal anemia in Malawi.

Malawi has made notable progress in reducing maternal mortality ratio from 439 in 2015 to 224 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births n 2026. This reflects strong commitment and sustained action. However, critical gaps remain. Behind every number is a life, and too many women are still dying from preventable causes.

Today’s discussions focused on unpacking the barriers affecting access to care and aligning on opportunities for more effective, context-driven interventions. The workshop provides a platform for stakeholders to move beyond identifying challenges to co-creating solutions that respond to real needs.

Director of Reproductive Health, Dr. Owen Chikhwaza said the Government remains committed to reducing maternal mortality further, with a target of 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030.

Technical Manager at Unitaid, Dale Halliday emphasized that engaging stakeholders at the earliest stages is critical to designing solutions that are not only effective, but sustainable.

The SUPREME Project, led by Amref Health Africa and Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and financially supported by Unitaid, is focused on closing the gap between lifesaving products for pre-eclampsia and maternal anemia and the women who need them most.

75 bicycles. Communities reached faster. Thousands of lives impacted.

Today, Amref Health Africa, in partnership with World Bicycle Relief and with support from the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation, handed over 75 Buffalo Bicycles (40 in Mangochi, 35 in Chikwawa) to Health Surveillance Assistants, strengthening last-mile healthcare delivery where it matters most.

For many HSAs, a normal day means walking long distances to reach families.

With these bicycles, we are:
✔ Reducing travel time
✔ Expanding service coverage
✔ Improving follow-up and response to community health needs

And when that happens, more children are vaccinated, more mothers access care, and more lives are saved.

This initiative is part of the Advancing Quality Public Health Coverage in Malawi through Capacity Building of Community Health Workers project, implemented by Amref Health Africa in Mangochi and Chikwawa, with support from the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation.

A day in the life of a health worker is anything but ordinary.

From early morning journeys to hard-to-reach communities, to ensuring children receive life-saving vaccines, to ensuring children receive life-saving vaccines, health workers like Alfred Chipande are always on the move, bringing care closer to those who need it most.

In Mlanje, Mangochi, this dedication means mothers no longer walk long distances for essential services. Children are protected. Communities are healthier.

This , we celebrate the resilience, compassion, and commitment of frontline heroes who show up every single day!
