What should African leaders hear from young people in Malawi?

The Malawian National Youth in Politics (MNYIP) has been invited to participate in the African Youth in Politics Forum (AYPF) 2026 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 5 November 2026. The Forum will bring together young leaders, presidents, ministers, parliamentarians, political party leaders and other stakeholders from across Africa.

We want to go to Addis Ababa not just with our own views, but with the voices and experiences of young people from across Malawi.

What issues matter most to you? What changes do you want to see? What would you like us to tell African leaders?

Yesterday, 5 September 2026, we conducted a data collection training for our data collectors which was led by Jacob Kelvin Mkhwamba. The goal was to equip them with the right skills so we can gather accurate and verified information for the Council Yanga website.

For those who may not know:
Council Yanga is a digital platform that allows citizens to track community development projects and participate in them. Most of the time, citizens want to contribute to building their communities but they don’t know what’s happening or how to get involved. Council Yanga provides real-time information where citizens can filter development projects in their council and find opportunities to participate.

For now, we are concentrating on Likoma Island. Our aim is to expand this platform to all District.

This project is supported by Digital Democracy Initiative and implemented by Malawian National Youth in Politics.

🌟 WOMEN IN POLITICS TRAINING PROGRAM

Are you a woman interested in politics, governance, civic leadership and decision-making? This opportunity is for you! ✊🏾

Politics4Her, in collaboration with Malawian National Youth in Politics (MNYIP), is organising a 3-day in-person Women in Politics Training Program in Mzuzu, Malawi.

The training will bring together 30 women involved in or aspiring to engage in politics, governance and civic leadership.

The training will provide an opportunity to build leadership skills, learn about political participation, connect with other women leaders and strengthen your voice in decision-making spaces.

Building a more informed and digitally connected youth. 🇲🇼📲

Yesterday, 26 August 2026, we held a partnership consultation meeting on Council Yanga in Likoma Island.

The meeting brought together Likoma North Councillor Mr. Ernest Gulu, media and youth representatives to discuss Council Yanga, a digital tool designed to make community development information more accessible to young people and the wider public.

Council Yanga does not create or invent new information. It digitizes information already shared and verified through community structures such as ADCs, VDCs and VAPs, making it easier for the public to access and engage with.

Our next step is to train data collectors on how to collect and document verified community information for the platform.

Council Yanga is developed by Malawian National Youth in Politics with support from the Digital Democracy Initiative.

🌍 Big News for MNYP! 🇲🇼

We're honoured to announce that Malawian National Youth in Politics (MNYIP) has been invited to participate in the African Youth in Politics Forum (AYPF) 2026

Convened by the Africa Governance Centre in partnership with the Government of Ethiopia, AYPF 2026 will bring together approximately 500 leaders from across the continent — including Heads of State, ministers, parliamentarians, and youth political leaders — as the official precursor to the African Political Parties Summit (APPS) 2026.

This is a proud moment for youth political leadership in Malawi. Our participation reflects the vital role MNYP continues to play in advancing civic engagement, democratic participation, and policy advocacy — not just at home, but on the continental stage.

We look forward to representing Malawi's youth voice as we help shape recommendations for the Addis Ababa Declaration on Governing for Growth.

Research by NDI Malawi found that many citizens have little or no knowledge of development projects planned for their communities or the funding available for them.

At the same time, Malawi is increasingly becoming digital, with 4.02 million internet users recorded at the end of 2025.

So we are asking:

Why shouldn't local government information be as accessible as the information young people already consume online?

Council Yanga is being created to explore a digital, youth-friendly way of bringing councils closer to citizens— making development information easier to find, follow and engage with.

Because you shouldn't have to wait for a meeting, announcement or noticeboard to find out what is happening in your community.
