Rising cases of teenage pregnancies, early marriages, and new HIV infections among adolescents continue to be a major concern in Malawi, with girls being the most affected.
It is against this background that the First Lady Madame Professor Gertrude Mutharika has launched the Youth Dialogue on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Project in Mzuzu, aiming to provide a platform for young people to openly discuss challenges affecting their lives and future.
Speaking at the launch, Madam Mutharika said issues such as peer pressure, unemployment, and lack of parental guidance are contributing to risky behaviours among young people. She called on parents, traditional leaders, and religious leaders to play an active role in guiding the youth, while encouraging young people to focus on education and make responsible decisions.
YAM-Malawi members from Mzuni, Mzuzu Centre, and Technical attended the event, representing Youth Action Movement - Malawi and the Family Planning Association of Malawi alongside Youth Coordinator Jimmy Kachale and other key leaders.
