Even in times of climate emergencies, access to essential sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services must remain uninterrupted.

Through the Girls Get Equal (GGE) 2.0 Project, we supported preparedness planning across eight healthโ€‘facility catchment areas in Traditional Authorities Juma, Ndanga, Tombondiya, and Sunganinzeru, Mulanje District.

Health workers, Youth Communityโ€‘Based Distribution Agents (YCBDAs), Health Surveillance Assistants, community leaders, and young people collaborated to identify climate risks, strengthen referral pathways, plan mobile outreach, and secure essential SRHR supplies. This process produced eight continuity plans to ensure adolescents and young people, especially girls and young women, can access vital services even when climate shocks disrupt normal delivery.

The GGE 2.0 Project, implemented by Point of Progress in Mulanje and Phalombe with support from Norad through Plan International Malawi, addresses early and forced child marriages while economically empowering communities.

โ€œAt first, I was shy about approaching health service providers to get accurate information on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Instead, I relied on information from my peers, which was often false or misleading. Through the CHOICE Project, I have gained the confidence to openly discuss SRHR during interactions at youth clubs, where peer educators and health workers provide us with accurate information. These interactions have also helped me understand and clear debunk and misconceptions surrounding sexual and reproductive health and rights. Now, I understand my SRHR, can make informed decisions, and know where to seek reliable information whenever I need further guidance.โ€

Mulanje remains one of the districts in Malawi registering high numbers of early child marriages. As a step towards addressing this pressing issue, Point of Progress, through the ๐†๐ข๐ซ๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐‘๐ข๐ฌ๐ž ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฃ๐ž๐œ๐ญ and with support from UN Women under the Chief Kachindamoto Fund (CKF), convened a stakeholder engagement meeting in T/A Chikumbu.

The meeting brought together Child Protection Committees, mother groups, Area Development Committees, Gender Champions, Community Victim Support Units, Group Village Heads, the office of T/A Chikumbu, Child Protection Workers, Social Welfare, the Malawi Police Service, and the Judiciary. Together, they explored ways to strengthen coordination and collaboration in preventing and responding to child protection concerns.

Point of Progress emphasized the importance of continued partnership with traditional leadership, Social Welfare, the Police, the Judiciary, and community structures to reinforce child protection systems. These collective efforts aim to protect children from abuse and exploitation while advancing the fight to end child marriage in Mulanje District.

For farmers at Napale Irrigation Scheme, irrigation allows them to grow crops beyond the rainy season and improve their livelihoods. Through the DRIVE Project, Point of Progress is equipping farmers with skills to use water efficiently and maintain irrigation infrastructure.

Point of Progress conducted irrigation and water management training to help farmers understand crop water requirements, coordinate water distribution, and maintain irrigation structures to reduce water losses and breakdowns.

โ€œThis training has helped us understand the importance of using our irrigation and water systems efficiently to ensure they last longer. We have also learned the right amount of water our crops need at different stages of growth. Before the training, we did not know that overwatering could negatively affect crop yields, but now we understand how proper water management can help us improve our production.โ€

Through our SEED participants, we visited ๐Š๐š๐œ๐ก๐ฎ๐ฆ๐›๐š๐๐ณ๐ข ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐ƒ๐š๐ฒ ๐’๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ง๐๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐’๐œ๐ก๐จ๐จ๐ฅ ๐ข๐ง ๐“/๐€ ๐Œ๐š๐ฅ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข to engage students in dialogue on food sovereignty and climate justice.

It was inspiring to hear the studentsโ€™ perspectives on food systems, climate change, and the role young people can play in building a more sustainable future. Their contributions highlighted the importance of youth participation in shaping resilient food systems and promoting sustainable solutions.

Together, we continue to promote knowledge sharing, climate justice, and community-driven solutions.

Through Point of Progressโ€™ initiative, Village Savings and Loans (VSLs) and Selfโ€‘Help Groups (SHGs) are being revamped and formed to empower women both economically and socially.

These groups go beyond finances : they serve as safe spaces where women discuss child rights, protection, nutrition, health, gender equality, and GBV cases.

With proper recordโ€‘keeping, shared visions, and the SHGA concept infused into VSLs, women are gaining financial resilience and social awareness. This dual empowerment helps them keep children in school, strengthen livelihoods, and improve overall wellbeing.
