Ending child marriage and gender based violence remains central to the mission of Point of Progress.

This week, Point of Progress and Oxfam brought together female Members of Parliament from Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique to strengthen regional action on protecting girls from forced marriages and ending gender based violence.

Speaking during the engagement, Mary Maulidi emphasized that the initiative seeks to strengthen regional collaboration in advancing the rights, safety, and empowerment of women and girls, while accelerating collective efforts to end harmful practices and violence across communities.

The engagement highlighted the importance of stronger policies, coordinated advocacy, and cross border partnerships in creating safer communities where girls and women can thrive with dignity and equal opportunity.
Point of Progress reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote gender equality, child protection, and the safety of women and girls.

This activity is supported by Oxfam in Malawi.

Today in Balaka, all eyes are on the official launch of the CHOICE Project.

This moment marks the start of a new chapter in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights, bringing together key stakeholders, partners, and the young people who will lead change in their communities.

As this important event unfolds today, it also reflects a strong legacy. For the past seven years, the Her Future Her Choice project has made a lasting impact by empowering young people with knowledge, strengthening their voices, and supporting healthier, informed decisions. That impact is still visible and celebrated
across communities.

Now, through CHOICE, that foundation is being taken further. Starting today, the project is set to equip young people with practical skills, accurate information, and leadership capacity to actively champion their rights and drive meaningful change.

Today is not just a launch. It is the beginning of a renewed commitment to building informed, empowered, and resilient communities led by young people.

Rice is more than a crop. It drives income, jobs, and local growth.
Our rice farmers in Phalombe scaled up production this season. The results are promising. Yields are improving, and confidence is rising across farming households.

A strong rice value chain depends on every step working well. Production alone is not enough. Processing and market access determine whether farmers earn full value. This is where the next gains will come from.

Our focus is clear. We will support farmers with improved processing and stronger links to markets so they can increase income and reduce losses.

“I planted 2 acres of rice this season. It has not been easy, but I can see the difference. With the right support, rice farming can change our lives,” says Eliza Wilson, a farmer in the rice value chain.

We are excited to bring together key stakeholders, especially young people, as we champion Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in our communities.

In Nkhulambe EPA, Phalombe District, Point of Progress, through the Girls Get Equal (GGE) Project, is supporting smallholder farmers to embrace cassava production as a pathway to stronger livelihoods and improved household resilience.

Beyond food security, cassava offers farmers a reliable crop with the potential to generate income, withstand changing weather conditions, and strengthen household nutrition. The project is also promoting cassava seed multiplication, enabling farmers to access quality planting materials while creating new opportunities for local seed production and sales.

“Cassava farming gives me hope for the future. With cassava seed multiplication, I expect better yields, more food for my family, and extra income from selling both roots and planting materials,” says Hendrix Mbelenga from Nkhulambe EPA in Phalombe District.

For farmers like Hendrix, cassava is more than a crop it is an investment in tomorrow, a shield against hunger, and a seed of prosperity for the whole community.

Promoting Crop Diversification for Stronger Communities in Phalombe

Under the Girls Get Equal (GGE) Project, we are supporting smallholder farmers in Phalombe to diversify their farming systems by introducing sweet potato production alongside traditional crops.

This initiative is helping households improve food security, increase dietary diversity, and create new opportunities for income generation through the sale of surplus produce. Sweet potatoes are a resilient crop with strong market potential, making them an important pathway toward sustainable livelihoods.

“Sweet potato farming has given my family another source of food and income. We now have more confidence that we can meet our household needs even when maize harvests are low,” says Wilson Thomas, a smallholder farmer benefiting from the project.

Through crop diversification, we are building resilience, improving nutrition, and empowering farming families to create a better future.
