We are thrilled to officially welcome six new volunteers to the WUSC Malawi family! 🇲🇼✨

Please join us in giving a warm "Takulandirani" to: Charlotte, Lillian, Jai, Hannah, Ibrahim, and Koaume. While some will be based right here at our Country Office, others will be heading out to collaborate directly with our incredible partner organizations across the country.

Each of these individuals brings a unique set of skills and a shared passion for creating opportunities for youth and women in Malawi. We are so grateful to have their energy and expertise as we continue working toward a more inclusive and equitable future.

These volunteers are joining us under the Volunteer Cooperation Program funded by Global Affairs Canada. Help us make them feel at home!

Today, WUSC Malawi is celebrating Earth Day 🌍

Across Malawi, we are proud to work alongside dedicated partners and communities who are leading the way in building climate resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and protecting the natural environments we all rely on. From community-driven initiatives to everyday actions, these efforts are creating meaningful change.

Earth Day is a powerful reminder that the health of our planet is a shared responsibility. The choices we make—both individually and collectively—shape the future of our environment. By supporting local solutions and working together, small actions can grow into lasting impact 💙

At WUSC - Malawi, we remain committed to empowering communities and advancing sustainable practices that help protect our Earth for generations to come.

Last week, the ACT Project hosted a 4-day Data Management Training in Blantyre and Lilongwe, bringing together a total of 35 dedicated community facilitators and government stakeholders. These facilitators play a vital role in supporting and overseeing groups of home-based caregivers, centre-based caregivers, and enterprise owners within their communities.

The training focused on strengthening data collection practices by sharing practical tools and approaches to improve how information is gathered across groups. Beyond data management, the participants also reflected on key lessons, discussed challenges, and explored possible solutions together.

The project team recognizes the facilitators’ dedication and the successful mobilization of childcare providers into groups. Such progress builds vital momentum for a more professional and coordinated childcare sector.

Supported by Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada, the ACT project aims to advance the economic empowerment of childcare providers in Malawi and Kenya.

Last week marked an important step for the future of childcare in Malawi!

The Ministry of Gender, through the ACT Project implemented in Malawi by WUSC in partnership with WOLREC and funded by Global Affairs Canada convened a group of stakeholders and experts from across the childcare ecosystem to develop the first draft of Malawi’s Childminders’ Manual.

Stakeholders who participated in drafting the manual included, WUSC, Women's Legal Resources Centre - WOLREC , Help a Child Malawi , the Association of Women in Religious Institutes in Malawi, NGO Coalition on Child Rights , University of Malawi - UNIMA , CCAP Synod of Livingstonia ECD Department, Association of Early Childhood Development in Malawi, Ministry of Labour and Sub-Saharan Africa Family Enrichment.

The manual aims to strengthen and formalize childminding services, helping ensure quality, safety, and equitable access to childcare for all children, while also advancing economic empowerment opportunities for women working in the childcare sector. With better-trained childcare providers and clearer standards of care, the manual is also expected to contribute to improved child outcomes, including better early learning, enhanced safety and wellbeing, and stronger cognitive and social development during the critical early years.

It was an incredibly productive week, with participants collaborating to produce a strong draft of the manual. As the process continues, we look forward to the finalized version and the impact it will have in increasing the number of trained childcare providers, professionalizing the sector, and improving the quality of childcare services across the country.

Quality childcare supports children, families, and women’s economic participation and this milestone brings Malawi one step closer to making that a reality.

On this International Women’s Day, WUSC Malawi celebrates the strength, leadership, and resilience of women and girls across the country. Every day, we work alongside communities and partners to improve gender equality, address gender-based violence, and create opportunities that empower women to lead and shape their futures.

By supporting young women and girls to access education, economic opportunities, and leadership pathways, we are helping build safer, more inclusive communities where women’s voices are heard and appreciated. Through collaboration with local partners who place women at the center of their work, we continue to support initiatives that strengthen livelihoods, promote dignity, and foster lasting change.

Together, we remain committed to uplifting women and girls and creating a more equitable and hopeful future for communities across Malawi.💙

Last week, WUSC Malawi proudly hosted our second Semi-Annual Partner Forum for 2025/2026 and PAC Meeting of the year in Salima, generously funded by Canada’s International Development – Global Affairs Canada

Hosted at Lakeside Hotel, the one-day Partner Forum and half day PAC meeting brought together partners and volunteers for meaningful conversations and forward-thinking collaboration. Together, we discussed topics surrounding harnessing AI for development, strengthening impact reporting, advancing sustainability and systems thinking, and building stronger strategic partnerships through innovative resource mobilization and volunteer engagement.

The energy in the room reflected a shared commitment to learning, adaptation, and collective impact. These discussions are more than conversations — they are shaping how we work together to create inclusive, resilient, and locally driven change across Malawi.

Thank you to our partners and volunteers for your leadership and continued commitment to sustainable development.
