PROJECT SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION 🌱

When the TRANSFORM Program officially ended in September 2025, some may have wondered: What happens next?

Today, we have the answer.

TRANSFORM was a five-year program (2020–September 2025), funded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy through Norwegian Church Aid Malawi. Its goal was not just to implement activities, but to build lasting capacity within communities.

And now, months after the project closed, the evidence of sustainability is clear.

📍 Lipili Section, Mndolera EPA – 21 February 2026

Just today, we received a report from a lead farmer in Lipili Section under Mndolera EPA. The farmers and the government extension worker facilitated a pass-on program, reaching 15 additional farmers.

No project staff.
No external push.

Just farmers continuing the process.

That is sustainability.

📍 Dzoole Section, Mndolera EPA – Farmers Driving Innovation

In Dzoole Section, Tipindule Farmer Field School is taking initiative. On their own, they are studying yield differences among three farming technologies:

• Box ridges
• Pit planting
• Ridge planting (control)

Their initial assessment shows that pit planting is performing better in terms of yield.

Farmers are no longer just recipients of knowledge. They are experimenting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions based on their own observations.

📍 Knowledge Sharing Beyond the Community

In December, Tipindule Farmer Group hosted farmers from Dedza who came to learn about peanut production.

This exchange visit demonstrates that skills gained during TRANSFORM are now spreading beyond the original target areas. Communities are becoming centers of learning for others.

A project may end on paper, but true transformation continues in practice.

The ongoing initiatives in Lipili and Dzoole are proof that TRANSFORM did not just deliver activities. It built ownership, confidence, and local leadership.

That is what real project sustainability looks like.

On 29 January 2026, Trustees of Agricultural Promotion Programme (TAPP) hosted a delegation from the Transforming Agriculture Through Diversification and Entrepreneurship (TRADE) Project Implementation Unit, led by Mr Emmanuel Mponya, Livestock Specialist, to review implementation progress in Thyolo District.

Following a roundtable discussion, the team visited Gunde Youth Club in GVH Katsongo, TA Bvumbwe. Supported with business training under the project, the youth group has entered the dairy value chain, producing yoghurt, mineral blocks, and planting fodder trees. The group’s Chairperson, Mr Henry Mafunga, said the support has strengthened their enterprise and enabled them to assist needy students with school fees and uniforms. Since December 2025, the group has generated MWK 174,000 from yoghurt sales from an initial investment of MWK 89,000.

The delegation, accompanied by the Thyolo District Agriculture Office, also visited Tafika Milk Bulking Group in TA Ndalama. The 240-member group, supported through the TAPP–MMPA consortium, has received training in feed making, good dairy husbandry, biogas use, and milk price advocacy. The group’s Chairlady, Ms Rose Kidney, reported an increase in milk yield from 8 to 13 litres per cow per day after adopting improved feeding practices such as hydroponic fodder, hay, and silage.

Commending the progress, Mr Mponya encouraged farmers to sustain adoption of improved dairy management practices. The District Chief Agricultural Officer, Mr Prince Shaibu, reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with partners to improve dairy farmers’ livelihoods.

TAPP, in consortium with Malawi Milk Producers Association (MMPA), is implementing the TRADE Project in Thyolo and Blantyre, working with 17 milk bulking groups and reaching over 6,000 farmers. The 2½-year project, which began in October 2024, is funded by the Government of Malawi, IFAD, and OFID.

Yesterday, TAPP was honoured to welcome the Director General of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), Gunn Jorid Roset and the Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi, Anne Sofie Bjelland, at the Chimangamsasa Community-Based Breeding Centre (CBBC) in Dowa District. Their visit provided an opportunity to observe first-hand how the CBBP initiative implemented by TAPP under the TRANSFORM Programme has positively impacted rural Dowa.

Through careful selection, controlled mating, and improved herd management, the breeding centre has recorded the birth of over 1,000 kids from 406 female goats this year alone. Speaking during the event, Mr Zombe, a beneficiary of the programme, highlighted the significant economic gains at the household level. “While in other communities around, goats are being sold at a maximum of MK180,000, in our area, goats reach up to MK300,000 due to the genetic improvements achieved through this initiative,” he said. He further noted that while goats previously produced only one kid, improved breeding practices have resulted in producing twins and, in some cases, triplets.

Commending the initiative, NORAD Director General Gunn Jorid Roset described the Chimangamsasa CBBP as an exemplar of sustainable, community-driven development that aligns strongly with NORAD’s development priorities.

More than 1,500 households across Dowa district are currently benefiting from the CBBP, with neighbouring communities beginning to adopt the model.

The TRANSFORM project is implemented by TAPP Malawi with funding from the Royal Norwegian Embassy through Church Aid Malawi (NCA-DCA).

𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗗𝗘 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴

A review meeting is underway today at the Bvumbwe TAPP-MMPA Office in Thyolo, focusing on key performance indicators (KPIs) for the next six months of the implementation of the Transforming Agriculture through Diversification and Entrepreneurship (TRADE) programme. The KPIs will guide progress tracking and help assess organisational performance, as TAPP and Malawi Milk Producers Association (MMPA) strongly believe in results-based implementation that drives measurable progress. The meeting has convened TRADE desk officer, two government officers from Thyolo and Blantyre and staff from TAPP and MMPA including the Executive Directors for the two organisations.

The TRADE programme is a six-year national initiative aimed at improving rural livelihoods through agricultural diversification, commercialisation and entrepreneurship. It focuses on strengthening key value chains such as dairy, beef, honey, groundnuts, soybeans, sunflower and irish potatoes.

TAPP is implementing the dairy component in partnership with MMPA, targeting over 6,000 dairy farmers in Thyolo and Blantyre Rural, promoting improved dairy production, organised marketing and farmer empowerment.
