Development structures in Mzimba District have committed to ensuring that women, youth, children and persons with disabilities are meaningfully included in the planning and implementation of community development initiatives.

The commitment follows an engagement under the Promoting Gender Transformative and Youth Inclusive Democracy Project, where local structures reflected on the importance of inclusive participation, community mobilisation and equitable decision-making. (Nation Online)

WOLREC, in partnership with Oxfam in Southern Africa, with support from the European Union in Malawi, continues to work towards more inclusive and participatory decision-making across Malawi.

Strengthening Survivor Support Through Improved Case Management

"Record keeping has been instrumental in helping us track cases and conduct timely follow-ups," says Bezita Dule, Chairperson of the Masula Community Victim Support Unit. "Oxfam, CEWAG and other organisations provided us with case registers and notebooks that enable us to document cases and maintain accurate records of our work. This has greatly contributed to our success."

Supported by Oxfam in Southern Africa and Coalition for the Empowerment of Women and Girls - CEWAG under the Irish Aid-funded Reducing Poverty and Inequality in Malawi Project, the Community Victim Support Unit works to prevent violence and ensure survivors can access essential GBV services. The group plays a critical role in facilitating timely medical and psychosocial support, reporting cases to the police for legal action, and promoting the protection of survivors' rights.

According to Dule, the unit most frequently handles cases of emotional, financial, and physical abuse.

"By recording cases, we are able to monitor their progress and ensure appropriate action is taken while survivors receive the support they need to rebuild their lives with dignity," explains Dule. "Consistent follow-up has also helped deter abuse, as community members know that cases will be pursued until survivors are protected and justice is served. These efforts have contributed to a decline in reported cases in our community. When we first started working with Oxfam and CEWAG, we recorded three to four cases a day. Today, there are days when we do not receive a single case."
