🏆 Certificate of Participation Received!

We are proud to share that Spatial Girls Network has been awarded a Certificate of Participation for participating in the Africa Map Cup organized by OpenStreetMap Africa and TomTom

Together, our dedicated team achieved: 🗺️ 50,852 buildings mapped 🛣️ 450 km of highways mapped on OpenStreetMap.

This achievement reflects our team's commitment, collaboration, and passion for using open geospatial data to create positive impact across Africa.

📢 Call for Participants

We are excited to share that Spatial Girls Network has been awarded a small grant by Openstreetmap Malawi to conduct a research study titled: "Assessing Gender-Disaggregated Enablers and Barriers to Participation in OpenStreetMap (OSM) and GIS in Malawi.”

We therefore invite individuals based in Malawi who have educational background and experience in GIS and OpenStreetMap (OSM) to participate in this study.

Your participation will help us better understand the factors that enable or hinder participation of men and women in GIS and OpenStreetMap, generating evidence to support more inclusive geospatial communities in Malawi.

Our Co-Founder and Programs Manager, Hattie Kalagho represented Spatial Girls Networkat the State of the Map Africa in Daresalaam, Tanzania. She shared our journey, impact, and future plans to advance our mission to empower and provide opportunities for girls and young women in geospatial sciences and technology in Malawi and beyond.

Through her presentation, she highlighted how Spatial Girls Network is creating pathways for young women to develop skills, build confidence, and pursue careers in the geospatial sector.

🚀ASCEND Project Successfully Completed!

Over the past weeks we had the incredible opportunity to introduce girls at Lilongwe Girls Secondary School to the exciting world of drone technology, mapping, geospatial sciences, and careers through the ASCEND Project.

Implemented by Spatial Girls Network through the ITUGender Champions Programme of the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), the project aimed to build skills, confidence, and exposure among young women in emerging technologies.

Throughout the training, participants:
✨Learned the fundamentals of drone technology and drone safety
✨Gained hands-on experience flying drones
✨Explored maps, cartography, and spatial thinking
✨Learnt about geospatial technologies and their real-world applications
✨Discovered educational pathways and career opportunities in STEM and the geospatial sector
✨Engaged with women working in the field and reflected on their own future aspirations

One of the highlights of the project was watching participants confidently operate & begin to see themselves as future , , , professionals, and technology .

A huge thank you to ITU (International telecommunication Telecommunication Union), the ITU160 Gender Champions Programme, Lilongwe Girls Secondary School, our facilitators, Hattie Kalagho, Twande Sikwese, Esther Mtambo just to mention a few and our role model Mayamiko Ndala, for supporting this initiative.

The future is bright, and it includes more girls in STEM.💡
