On Wednesday, we launched the 2025 Global Hunger Index (GHI), spotlighting the status of the global efforts against hunger and Malawi’s position on the GHI scale. The conversation went beyond numbers and charts. It was also about what must happen to move forward. Malawi is ranked 22 in the 2025 GHI score and is facing a level of hunger classified as ‘serious’. This calls for urgency and swift action. However, the discussion showed that change is possible through coordination, consistent implementation of policies and operationalization of existing ones.

“Solutions exist,” said our Country Director, Susan Bipa, at the launch. “There are value chains that can improve incomes and nutrition. There are gaps that we already understand and can address. And there are practical actions that can make a real difference in people’s lives,” she continued.

At the launch, we also presented the findings of a Food Systems Assessment that we conducted jointly with Concern Worldwide in Mchinji and Mangochi districts. The assessment points to both challenges and opportunities to improve food systems and food and nutrition security.

We thank the Government and all partners and stakeholders who joined us and made the launch a success.

On 15 April, Welthungerhilfe (WHH) Malawi, jointly with Concern Worldwide, will launch the Global Hunger Index (GHI) in Malawi. This year marks the 20th edition of the report—a milestone reached at a time of rising concern about global food security. Conflicts, climate shocks, economic pressures, and growing inequalities continue to drive hunger, while global engagement and resources are falling short. Yet hunger is not inevitable. Where sound policies, effective governance, and strong commitment align, progress is possible.

In Malawi, the situation reflects these global trends. Around 4 million people currently face acute food insecurity, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). Past challenges in policy implementation, governance constraints, and limited coordination across sectors continue to contribute to food insecurity, placing already vulnerable communities at greater risk. Malnutrition trends are equally concerning.

Hunger remains one of the most urgent challenges of our time. Tomorrow, we take a closer look at what the latest evidence means for Malawi.

Join us this Wednesday as we launch the 2025 Global Hunger Index (GHI) in Malawi. The Global Hunger Index is a peer-reviewed annual report jointly published by Concern Worldwide, Welthungerhilfe, and the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV). The marks the 20th edition of the report, a milestone that comes at a time of growing concern about global food security. What does this mean for Malawi? And what actions are needed now?

We are bringing together representatives from government, academia, development partners, and civil society to reflect on the country’s hunger and nutrition landscape, discuss policy implications, and identify solutions to accelerate progress.

Mixing business with a little adventure! That’s how we spent last Thursday during our interactive staff retreat.

We kicked off the day by unpacking our 2026–2030 Country Strategy, aligning on our shared vision and the strategic steps needed to get there. Successful ex*****on of the strategy starts with everyone being on board. We also held an important session on mental health, reflecting on how to identify and overcome burnout in the workplace. After all, healthy employees are key to a productive and supportive work environment.

Then came the fun part, an exhilarating obstacle course! The team took on a series of challenges designed to test physical strength, coordination, and problem-solving. There was plenty of movement, laughter, and teamwork as everyone worked together to complete each task. The exercise was more than just running and jumping. The experience reminded us how much we can achieve when we operate as one team, united for a common purpose of Zero Hunger.

What is systems thinking and why does it matter for transforming food systems? How do we navigate complex challenges to build more resilient food systems? These are some of the questions that WHH and our partners explored during a systems thinking for joint action towards sustainable and resilient food systems workshop held last week.

From Monday to Thursday, we discussed key topics such as theory of change, climate-resilient food systems, and building strong strategic partnerships. The workshop also focused on how to put into action the findings from a recent Food Systems Assessment conducted by WHH and Concern Worldwide in Mangochi and Mchinji districts. Our intention is to strengthen how we work together so that farmers and communities can better cope with challenges like climate change and food insecurity.

A big thank you to Jasmine Koottummel and James Love for facilitating such an interactive and active session. They did an excellent job of breaking down complex ideas into simple, practical concepts.

Today, we join the world in commemorating International Day of Forests under the theme ‘Forests and Economies’. We recognize the critical role forests play in driving economic property. Forests also contribute to increased agricultural productivity. Let’s take action to protect and restore forests in our communities.

This week was an exciting one for us! We had the honour of welcoming Mrs Elke Proell, Technical Advisor for Bengo Regional Department Africa. She came to see how the Nutrition Smart CommUNITY project is changing lives in rural Malawi.

Our partners, Kusamala Institute of Agriculture and Ecology and Civil Society Organisation Nutrition Alliance-CSONA, are carrying out the project in Traditional Authority Nankumba in Mangochi District, where child wasting is much higher than the national average. Mrs Proell visited various project sites to learn how we bring nutrition education closer to families and help them fight malnutrition at home.

She saw how the project uses simple but powerful approaches, like kitchen gardens, livestock management, care groups, and gender model families, to challenge norms and help families grow healthier.

Yesterday marked an important milestone in strengthening community-led water management in Dzaleka Refugee Camp. We officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Dzaleka Water Users Association (WUA), reinforcing our shared commitment to sustainable and community-managed water services.

As part of this partnership, WHH handed over essential office equipment and tools to support the WUA in effectively managing water services and promoting hygiene within the community. The support includes laptop computers, a printer, office furniture, bicycles, and hygiene promotion and sanitation tools.

This handover represents an important step toward empowering community institutions to take greater ownership of water services, building local capacity, and ensuring that safe water and hygiene promotion efforts remain sustainable in Dzaleka. WHH remains committed to working alongside communities and partners to build resilient, locally driven WASH systems that last.

A healthier future for children and communities in TA Kachere, Dedza District has begun. WHH has rolled out the Healthy Schools and Communities, Strong Futures Project in the Matundu Education Zone to improve access to food, clean water, sanitation, and education.

Activities started with registration of project participants, household baseline surveys, community sensitization meetings to introduce the Home-Grown School Meals Programme (HGSMP) and revamping of the Area and Village Nutrition Coordinating Committees.

The project aims to strengthen existing government services, schools, and community structures to improve access to food, WASH, and education while creating conditions for lasting, self-sustaining change in TA Kachere.

Since 2017, we have been working in Dzaleka Refugee Camp to improve access to water, sanitation and hygiene for underserved communities. But the real impact of this work is best understood by seeing it on the ground.

Yesterday, we were pleased to host representatives from the German Embassy Lilongwe and show them how our interventions are making a difference in the camp. Andreas Hartman, Head of Cooperation, and Susanne Meltl, Deputy Head of Cooperation, visited our project site in Dzaleka, where we shared the progress made over the years and the steps we are taking to strengthen community ownership of projects, especially in the face of reduced funding.

The delegation also visited the vocational training centre run by our partner, There Is Hope Malawi. There, they saw how skills training is opening doors for both young Malawians and refugees, helping them gain skills that can lead to jobs and entrepreneurship.

5 Countries. 4 Days. 1 Goal. Zero Hunger.

From Tuesday 17 February to Friday 20 February, we hosted a Programme Learning Exchange for countries implementing the Digital Innovations for Zero Hunger Phase 3 project. Together with our partners, Civil Society Organisation Nutrition Alliance-CSONA, Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) and Agricultural Commodity Exchange for Africa (ACE), we were joined by colleagues from Whh Uganda Welthungerhilfe, Welthungerhilfe Burundi, WHH India - Welthungerhilfe, and Welthungerhilfe Germany. The four-day exchange created space to reflect on achievements and challenges from Phases 1 and 2, and most importantly, answer the BIG question - how do we ensure the impact continues even after the project ends?

It was an “all-hands-on-deck” session filled with honest conversations as the teams celebrated their wins, shared lessons, and discussed what comes next. Because ending a project should never mean ending the impact.

The Digital Innovation for Zero Hunger project is funded by Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ)
