STRUGGLE SHAPES SUCCESS: GIRLS OF MANDEVU VILLAGE ENCOURAGED TO PERSEVERE

Recently, Girls Against Early Marriages (GAEM) was at Chindevu Village, Traditional Authority Kapeni, in Lunzu Blantyre, to inspire, motivate and encourage girls to remain determined to their goals despite the obstacles that may come their ways.

Led by facilitator, Memory Pondeponde, girls of Chindevu Village portrayed the scenario in a powerful game that involved the girls' eyes masked, struggling and searching for soft drinks and snacks that were distributed on the ground.

The masking of their eyes represented the challenges that are always there, but with determination, focus and hard work, the girls' respective designations, which were represented by the soft drinks and snacks can be successfully reached.

Through the game, the girls were reminded to persevere no matter the challenges they encounter, to achieve their education, economic and various life goals.

GAEM remains committed to empowering girls of 10 to 24 years of age with the mindset and skills to overcome barriers to education and economic empowerment.

GAEM HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES IGNITE HOPE IN KASUNGU

On 28 August 2026, Girls Against Early Marriages (GAEM) was at Chiwuno 2 village, Traditional Authority Kawomba in Kasungu for it's 2026 holiday activities.

Led by Facilitator Triphonia Makwinja, Girls of Chiwuno village had an opportunity to come together and discuss various issues on education, sexual reproductive health and economic empowerment.

In addition, the girls actively participated in various sports activities including Netball enhancing team work, interaction among the girls and their physical fitness.

"Despite some challenges such as damaged netball equipments, the activity was great and girls showed a lot of interest and enthusiasm. We look forward to conducting more activities and encouraging girls to participate in positive and empowering programs" Makwinja explained.

GAEM remains committed to increasing girls' opportunities and access to education, life skills and economic empowerment activities.

GAEM believes that when girls of 10 to 24 years of age are kept engaged their risk to early marriages, teenage pregnancies and school dropout is greatly reduced.

MORE THAN GAMES: HEALTH AND LEARNING FILL MPEMBA NANKUMBA GROUND

Yesterday, 21 August 2026, Girls Against Early Marriages (GAEM) was at Mpemba Nankumba Ground in Blantyre, where several holiday activities were taking place to keep girls engaged, informed and empowered.

We were also privileged to have a Health Diagnosis Assistant (HDA) from St. Vincent facility, who provided test kits and health services to girls aged 15–24 years.

The girls actively participated in various activities happening on the ground, It was a productive day filled with learning, health awareness and positive engagement.

GAEM continues to create safe spaces where girls can learn, stay active and make informed decisions about their lives.

GAEM HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES TAKE SHAPE IN BLANTYRE

Josamu village in Mpemba, Blantyre came alive yesterday as GAEM holiday activities brought together young women aged 18 to 24 for a day of learning, bonding and sports.

The session focused on creating safe spaces where girls can develop leadership, teamwork and life skills during the school holiday.

Among other sporting activities, girls in Mpemba played a Netball match that saw the girls compete with energy, teamwork and lots of laughter.

Beyond the games, facilitator Magret Mateyu led discussions on sexual reproductive health, education and economic empowerment to equip young women with knowledge to make informed choices.

At GAEM, we believe that when girls effectively utilize their free time through sports, education and business discussions their exposure to risky activities is greatly reduced.

Successful Community Engagement in Balaka

Today, 20th August 2026, Dorothy Kaimfa, GAEM Representative for Balaka, Govati Village under TA Phalula, represented Girls Against Early Marriages (GAEM) at a meeting with the Area Development Committee (ADC) at Phalula Council Hall.

The meeting focused on discussing practical ways of working together to end early marriages in the district and create a safer and brighter future for girls.

GAEM appreciates the commitment of the ADC and all stakeholders who are working together to protect girls and promote their rights.

Together, we can end early marriages. No girl should be left behind.

SELF-RELIANT AT 22: ESTHER CHILEMBA PROVES FARMING IS ALSO A FUTURE FOR YOUNG WOMEN

inspiration from Esther Chilemba

Meet Esther Chilemba, a 22-year-old young woman from Mkwapatila Village, T/A Nsomba, Blantyre.

After completing her MSCE, Esther decided to venture into farming instead of waiting for an office job. She went to Wambewu Farm in Chiradzulu, where she learned different farming skills.

Today, she has her own garden where she grows vegetables and tomatoes.

Today, GAEM visited Esther to hear her inspiring story and learn from her journey.

Esther's message to girls and young women is simple and inspirational,

"Don’t only depend on office jobs. Try farming and other businesses that can help you become self-reliant.”

Esther is a true example that with determination and the right skills, young women can create opportunities for themselves.

Stories like Esther's also highlights to us what's possible when young girls and women are determined and empowered with skills in various aspects including farming, education and business.

SAFE SPACES, BIG DREAMS: GAEM KICKS OFF WEEKLY MEET-UPS IN LILONGWE

Girls Against Early Marriages (GAEM) on 12th August 2026, successfully started conducting its girls holiday activities at Kalulu village, Chinsapo in Lilongwe.

Despite not being impressed with the girls turn up on first day, GAEM Volunteer, Catherine Ching'ombe, described the excitement among the girls as overwhelming and a reflection of the girls eagerness to have safe spaces during the holiday.

"We discussed a lot, the aim was not only for them to play but also be encouraged to avoid risky behaviors that may lead to early marriages and pregnancies and successfully proceed with their education dreams" Ching'ombe explained.

During this first activity, girls at Kalulu village played various sports activities including Fulaye.

The activities are targeting girls of 10 to 24 years of age as a majority of them are at a risk of forced marriages and exposed to various gender based violence acts such as r**e.

GAEM remains committed to providing girls with safe spaces, spaces that they can fully express themselves and engage in activities that will help them in building their confidence and giving them life skills and opportunities.
