Following an engagement meeting with religious and traditional leaders, Village Head Ngwirinji convened a community awareness session in Ngwirinji Village.

Traditional leaders and religious leaders are taking bold steps to safeguard girls' rights, tackle child marriage and gender based violence, and keep girls in school.

This is being done through the Chief Kachindamoto Fund, implemented by PACHI in Mulanje district with financial support from the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Lilongwe, Malawi through UN Women Malawi

Parent and Child Health Initiative (PACHI) has intensified efforts to end child marriages in Mulanje by engaging traditional and religious leaders to promote positive cultural norms and support girls affected by child marriages to return to school.

Speaking during a stakeholder meeting in the district, PACHI District Project Officer Margret Mtekateka said the initiative seeks to strengthen community action against child marriages and ensure affected girls continue with their education.

Director of Community Social Services for Mulanje District, Samuel Ziba, commended the initiative, saying keeping girls in school would help prepare responsible citizens who can contribute to the development of their communities.

Senior Chief Chikumbu pledged to support efforts to end child marriages in her area, stressing that education is key to community development.

PACHI, together with Point of Progress and Mulanje District Council supported an Area Development Committee (ADC) meeting in Traditional Authority Chikumbu to build community support for the new Chief Kachindamoto funded project aimed at ending child marriages.

Senior Chief Chikumbu warmly welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that collaboration with PACHI, Point of Progress , government departments and local leaders will create lasting change.

The Ward Councillor for Ntenjeru Ward, Thoko Virtous Namoyo, also endorsed the initiative, noting that it will help address existing resource and implementation gaps.

The ADC Chairperson emphasized that child marriages remain a serious challenge and called for stronger involvement of traditional, community and religious leaders to promote positive cultural norms and end the practice.
