GEM Tween Workshop!
We had such a practical and engaging session with the children.
We started with a Messy Room Challenge. We improvised a bedroom setup at Lilongwe Play Centre using tables as a bed (luckily that worked perfectly ). When we asked the boys and girls if they recognized the room, they immediately laughed. Some said it looked like their brother’s room, others said their friend’s room… and we all laughed together- even though they go for sleepovers!
We then asked them to work as a team to clean the room. As they were cleaning, we asked questions like what should be done with dirty clothes. This naturally led us into our next activity.
From there, we moved on to washing clothes that were part of the “mess.” Parents had packed light clothes, which made it easier. Some children mentioned that they use washing machines at home, but we reminded them that there will be times when they will need to wash by hand. They washed their clothes, hung them on the line, and we continued with our discussions.
We talked about proper bathing, basic grooming, and taking care of their bodies. We emphasized that hygiene is part of responsibility and also a sign of self-respect. We also discussed proper toilet use. When asked, many shared that they avoid using toilets at school because they are messy. This opened up an honest conversation. We reminded them that those same toilets are used by people like them, coming from good homes, and that change starts with each individual. We talked about simple but important habits like flushing, keeping the seat clean, and not leaving things for someone else to clean. (Yes, we even had to remind the boys to aim properly 🫣😄). They also watched a short video on toilet manners.
We wrapped up the session by talking about emotions—encouraging them to express themselves, not to keep issues inside, and to respect themselves and others. We also challenged them to start helping with small responsibilities at home, especially since many mentioned, “my maid does this.”
Overall, it was a meaningful session, and we hope they will begin to practice what they have learned and been reminded of.
We appreciate your continued support and partnership as we guide the children in building confidence, responsibility, and life skills. We encourage you to continue these conversations at home.
