Today, 20th June 2026, Dzenza Christian Secondary School held a graduation ceremony for its Form Four students at its campus in Area 25, Lilongwe.

The ECAMA Executive Director, Dr. Esmie Koriheya Kanyumbu, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour. She reminded the students that completing secondary school marks only the end of the first chapter in their academic journey, urging them to press forward with determination and resilience.

Dr. Kanyumbu encouraged the students to protect their moral values, integrity, honesty, and trust. She also advised those who may not proceed to higher learning institutions to acquire practical skills that will enable them to venture into entrepreneurship. She declared that the future of Malawi’s economy lies in their hands, and that a bright future belongs to them.

The Member of Parliament for Lilongwe City–Dzenza Constituency, Honourable Jonathan Mfune, advised the students to uphold moral discipline and avoid teenage pregnancies that could derail them from achieving their goals.

Economics Association of Malawi - ECAMA ATTENDS THE NATIONAL ECONOMIC RECOVERY PLAN (NERP) CONSULTATION MEETING

On 3rd June 2026, the Government of Malawi, through the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation, held a consultative workshop on the National Economic Recovery Plan (NERP) 2025–2030 at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC). The workshop was presided over by the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation, Honourable Joseph Mwanamveka, MP, who served as the Guest of Honour. The Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA) was represented by its President, Dr. Bertha Bangara Chikadza, and Economics Intern, Charity Mwenda.

During the workshop, the Director of Economic Planning, Mr Zembele presented the National Economic Recovery Plan. In his remarks, the Minister highlighted that the NERP was developed in response to the macroeconomic challenges that have affected the country over the past five years. The Plan therefore aims to restore and stabilize the economy while accelerating economic growth by addressing the structural challenges facing the country.

ECAMA appreciated the efforts the government is making to improve the country's economic situation and shared some realistic proposals that the government can adopt in implementing this initiative. ECAMA highlighted the need to diversify agricultural investments and shift to other agricultural subsectors, such as horticulture, as other countries have successfully done. The Association also recommended the establishment of 10 to 15 irrigation corridors that can be effectively monitored to enhance productivity in the agricultural sector.

Furthermore, ECAMA observed that although agriculture receives significant attention, alongside mining, other priority sectors identified under the Malawi 2063 agenda namely Tourism, Mining, and Manufacturing (ATMM) also have substantial potential to contribute to economic growth and should be equally supported to increase the country's GDP. The Association further advised that the NERP should establish an independent body to monitor and evaluate implementation progress, arguing that the same team should not be responsible for both implementation and oversight. Such an arrangement, it noted, would strengthen accountability and transparency.

European Union in Malawi Ambassador Hosts ECAMA for Courtesy Call

The Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA) met the European Union in Malawi (EU) Ambassador to Malawi, H.E. Daniel Aristi-Gaztelumendi, at the EU offices on Tuesday, 2nd June 2026 in Lilongwe. The engagement formed part of a courtesy call by the Ambassador, who sought to gain a deeper understanding of Malawi’s economic situation and identify areas where EU-supported programmes could best contribute to the country’s development.

During the discussions, ECAMA, represented by President Dr. Bertha Bangara Chikadza and Economist Tadala Primrose Chikafutwa, provided an overview of the current state of the Malawian economy, highlighting key macroeconomic challenges, including high inflation, which has increased the cost of living, rising public debt, foreign exchange shortages, and the wide exchange rate disparity between the formal and parallel markets. The Association also highlighted the country’s vulnerability to climate-related shocks due to its heavy dependence on rain-fed agriculture.

H.E. was particularly interested in the ongoing developments surrounding Malawi’s public debt, of which approximately 65 percent is domestic, and how this affects the debt restructuring process. ECAMA explained that while commercial banks hold a significant portion of the domestic debt, commendable progress has been made in restructuring it. The Association noted that the reforms being undertaken are intended to ensure that both the country and lenders are not left worse off. The meeting also discussed several other measures the government is implementing as part of the domestic debt restructuring process.

The conversation further explored the impact of exchange rate adjustments and currency devaluation on the economy. While acknowledging the importance of restoring external balance and improving export competitiveness, ECAMA emphasized that it is crucial to address the root causes of foreign exchange shortages before considering devaluation as a solution. ECAMA believes that Malawi’s foreign exchange challenges are largely structural in nature and require the establishment of effective systems to close existing loopholes, curb smuggling, and prevent the illegal export of commodities and mined minerals through unmonitored routes. ECAMA also emphasized the significant potential of the mining sector to generate foreign exchange earnings and revenue for the country.

The Association highlighted that, if supported by appropriate policies, regulations, and institutional frameworks, the mining sector could become a game changer in addressing Malawi’s persistent foreign exchange shortages.
ECAMA also briefed the Ambassador on some of its previous collaborations with the European Union. These included student debates conducted in 2019 and 2020, as well as the implementation of the Enhanced Evidence-Based Research to Inform Policy Decision-Making in Public Finance Management (PFM) project between 2021 and 2023. The project was implemented in partnership with Oxfam Malawi and LUANAR under the Chuma cha dziko programme.

The Ambassador expressed appreciation for the insights shared by ECAMA and commended the Association’s role in promoting evidence-based policy dialogue and informed economic discourse. He further indicated that he would engage with other partners to explore available programmes and opportunities that could be implemented in collaboration with ECAMA in the future.
