Meet Alpheus Njewa and Vanessa Udedi, therapists from Patsogolo CP Foundation in Mangochi.

They joined us during the outreach camp at Kapedzera Primary School, bringing their expertise in assessing and supporting children with Cerebral Palsy.

Their participation is a great example of what made the outreach special: bringing together specialists from Malawi and beyond, sharing expertise, and making much-needed services available closer to children and their families.

We are grateful to Patsogolo CP Foundation for sending Alpheus and Vanessa to support this important work.

Today, we have joined the Lilongwe District Council to commemorate the 2026 Day of the African Child under the theme: “Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child.”

For children with disabilities, access to WASH goes beyond having water and toilets. It means ensuring that WASH facilities are accessible, supporting caregivers with appropriate positioning and feeding techniques, and empowering families to provide safe and dignified care for children with severe disabilities.

In the pictures, Yankho Gama, our Rehabilitation Technician, demonstrates how we support caregivers with positioning and feeding/drinking mechanisms for children with severe disabilities.

We also used the opportunity to call on duty bearers to ensure that public WASH facilities are designed and made accessible to children and adults with disabilities.

Universal access means everyone.

No child should be left behind because a water point, toilet or hygiene facility was not designed with disability in mind.

A big thank you to Mzati Haven Inclusive Preschool, which worked alongside the Ministry of Education - Malawi and SNE specialists from Tanzania's Gabriella Children's Rehabilitation Centre and other countries to bring much-needed attention to the education needs of children with disabilities.

In Malawi, one SNE teacher can be responsible for supporting learners with disabilities across approximately 11 schools within an education zone. That is an enormous responsibility, and it means many learners can go without timely assessment and the support they need to participate and learn effectively.

This is where Mzati Haven Inclusive Preschool came in.

During the Summit, 186 children were assessed to better understand their educational needs, while some teachers were also equipped with practical knowledge and strategies to support learners with disabilities in the classroom.

Mzati Haven, . You have made the 2026 ADC Summit UNIQUE.

means helping a child be understood, supported, and included in the classroom.

Saint John of God Hospitaller Services

At the 2026 ADC Summit Outreach, Saint John of God Hospitaller Services brought epilepsy drugs and care to the community.

75% of the patients seen were already known to be on epilepsy treatment, but had stopped taking their medication because the drugs were not available in public hospitals. The remaining patients had never been on treatment.

In Malawi, medicine shortages disrupt epilepsy treatment, affecting patients’ health, safety, education, work, and daily lives.

That is why having Saint John of God Hospitaller Services at the ADC Summit Outreach was so important.

The team also provided screening, therapies, and referrals, helping patients access a more complete pathway of care.

Behind this work were their incredible therapists and medical personnel from Mzuzu and Lilongwe, who gave their time, skills, and compassion to serve communities at Kapedzera.

Big shoutout to Saint John of God Hospitaller Services. Your presence was not just valuable. It was necessary.

A big thank you to St Gabriel’s Hospital for supporting the 2026 ADC Summit Outreach by sending two specialist paediatric therapists who provided assessments, therapy, and referrals.

Your team helped bring specialised rehabilitation services closer to children and families who needed them, turning our message of Early Action into action on the ground.

Thank you, St Gabriel’s Hospital, for showing what partnership and early action can look like. 🙌🏾

GoodVision Malawi - GoodVision Glasses, thank you for bringing vision care directly to the community and helping turn the 2026 ADC Summit’s message of Early Action into something children and families could actually experience.

Together with ABC Eye Clinic and Bwaila DHO, the team screened 374 people, of which 224 were children.

GoodVision Malawi - GoodVision Glasses provided 53 glasses to students for free. And 15 community members accessed glasses at a subsidised price.

for being part of the ADC Summit Outreach and for helping make inclusion practical, visible, and meaningful.

Anatitsimikizira kuti uthenga wa Inclusive Education ukafika kulikose akayende iwowo.

After being trained as a Community Champion for Inclusive Education by Fount For Nations, Moses Kambatata champions inclusive education wherever he goes. He is a Standard 8 teacher at Maone Primary School in Dowa. This time, he came to the University of Malawi to mark PSLCE National Exams and the message was delivered as well.

His wish is to become a Special Needs Education Teacher.

Every gathering is an opportunity to learn, connect, and imagine what comes next.

Our Executive Director, Patience Mkandawire, is at the Segal Family Foundation , joining changemakers from across Africa and beyond to exchange ideas, build partnerships, and explore solutions for stronger communities.

As the conversations continue, so does our commitment to shaping the next beat for children with disabilities.

We're excited for the conversations still ahead and the possibilities they will unlock.

Seeing this crowd turn up for the Outreach Medical Camps, we didn't know whether to be happy that they had come to seek help for their children or to shed tears because all of them, from just one community, need specialized care that is very limited in Malawi.

One thing is clear: our situation in Malawi is heartbreaking. This is the reality in many of our communities. Today, we managed to see over 1,000 people. But there are thousands more out there waiting for the health interventions they desperately need, and those services are simply not available.

Malawi urgently needs more funding for health interventions for children with disabilities. We need more outreach programmes. We need more specialists.
