A major focus of COP29, held in Baku, Azerbaijan (Nov 2024), was climate financing that was designed to scale up support for developing countries to implement climate action and transition to low‑carbon economies.
This week, Malawi hosts the African Regional Conference advancing sustainable, equitable and just and technical support for Loss and Damage, a critical step in advancing Africa’s climate justice agenda. We are proud to support this conference, both technically and financially, because it aligns with the goals of our Voices for Climate Justice Project, funded by the Government of Ireland in Malawi. Stay tuned, we will keep you informed throughout the conference.

Malawi’s poverty is man-made and must never be normalised. Last week, we launched the 2025 Commitment to Reducing Inequality (CRI) Report, which exposes the alarming gap between a privileged few and the struggling majority."

Today in Lilongwe, we officially launched the NCA-DCA Country Strategy 2025-2029—a bold roadmap and plan for our work complementing government’s development efforts. Our Country Director, Stefan Jansen, in his address, acknowledged the changing donor funding landscape in the wake of the cessation of USAID and global aid is shifting, but as NCA-DCA we do not stand still in the face of adversity—we move forward! This new country strategy commits to innovation, determination, and collaboration. The new strategy addresses GBV, climate and environmental stewardship, fighting inequality and economic development and food security. Jansen also emphasized that while the aid landscape has changed, the challenges of poverty, hunger, environmental degradation, and inequality remain—and have even grown. He said that is why NCA-DCA will be more innovative, exploring new ways of financing projects, and forging strong partnerships with the private sector, faith-based organizations, the civil society and government. During the event Jansen introduced NCA-DCA Innovation Fund—already seeded with 16 million MWK—to support economic growth, food security, climate action, and gender equality, while calling for more donors, private sector collaboration and more support from all other stakeholders. He appealed to all present that they should invest in local solutions and lasting impact. Special thanks to Her Excellency the Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi, Ingrid Marie Mikelsen, for her Government’s unwavering support to the work of NCA-DCA in Malawi. The Deputy Minister of Health, Halima Daudi also graced the event where she acknowledged NCA-DCAs developmental and humanitarian work in the hard-to-reach areas of the country. Her Excellency the Norwegian ambassador reaffirmed Norway’s commitment to supporting Malawi’s development and humanitarian efforts.

𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭. 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧’𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬!
Today, NCA-DCA and partners planted 1,000 trees at St. John’s Primary School in Area 36, Lilongwe, to restore its environment and protect it from future disasters.
Aisha Patson, a pupil at the school, shared how heavy winds earlier this rainy season caused extensive damage, destroying two school blocks and teachers' toilets. She believes the lack of trees around the campus contributed to the destruction, as the bare grounds offered no resistance to the winds.
The event was graced by the Head of Cooperation at the Royal Norwegian Embassy (Siri Frette Allsted), the Deputy Mayor (Ruth Chingwalu), the Director of Parks (Allan Kwanjana) and local leaders, alongside enthusiastic participation from partners, students, staff, and the wider community.
This tree-planting exercise also serves as a precursor to the launch of NCA-DCA’s 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, which introduces Climate and Environmental Stewardship as a key thematic area—complementing efforts in GBV, Fighting Inequalities, Economic Development, and Food Security.
Supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Lilongwe, this initiative emphasizes our collective responsibility to recreate and protect our environment. As NCA-DCA’s Country Director, Stefan Jansen, said: "We all have a responsibility to recreate our environment so that it supports us better and allows us to live in harmony with the ecosystem. Planting trees is a powerful symbol of that commitment."

For many children, the school bell should signal learning and joy—not fear. Some see school as a haven from abuse at home, while others face bullying from peers or teachers. Through Girl Guides and Boy Scouts, our partner is creating safer spaces for boys and girls in schools. Fighting GBV starts at home and in the classroom. Let’s ensure every child feels safe when the school bell rings.

The 2024 Malawi Mining Indaba wrapped up on Thursday this week with a powerful call to action! Delegates stood united to demand transparency, accountability, and timely government regulation in the mining sector, while emphasizing collaboration among stakeholders to protect resources and communities. Closing the event, Stefan Jansen from the Norwegian Church Aid and DanChurchAid Malawi Joint Country Programme, highlighted that MWAMI isn’t just a platform—it’s a driver of change. By uniting government, CSOs, investors, academia, and mining communities, it helps tackle challenges, measure progress, and forge sustainable solutions rooted in local priorities. Jansen said now is the time to turn resolutions into action. Let’s move beyond rhetoric and make 2024 a transformative year for Malawi’s mining sector. Grateful to our donor, , for making this impactful event possible! The indaba was attended by CSOs, government and members of the mining industry. NCA/DCA, Oxfam Malawi and ActionAid Malawi came together to organize the event.
