*Empowering Women Religious in Malawi: A Stride Towards Institutional Excellence**
In a recent workshop hosted by the Association of Women in Religious Institutes in Malawi (AWRIM), with financial support from the African Sisters Education Collaborative (ASEC), which champions education for Women Religious in Africa through the Intensive Institutional Capacity Building (ICB) program, funded by the Hilton Foundation, the Mother Superiors of various congregations gathered in Lilongwe to enhance their institutional capacities through policy development.
The workshop was held from December 1st to 3rd, 2023, with 30 participants from 22 congregations and six institutions led by Sisters, organized by AdviseWise consultancy, led by Mr. Michael Nkrumah Osei from Ghana, and facilitated by two local consultants from Malawi, the event aimed to address the absence of proper policies within different institutions and congregations.
According to AdviseWise consultants, the mentoring and coaching provided in collaboration with AWRIM revealed a need to strengthen policies in various institutions to address contemporary policy environments, necessitating the workshop. The focus was on empowering the Sisters to develop and review policies independently for more efficient operations within their respective capacities.
Sr. Agnes Jonas, Chairperson of AWRIM, expressed gratitude to ASEC and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation for funding the workshop. She highlighted that the developed policies would significantly contribute to the congregation's mission within the Church, becoming a cornerstone for their apostolate.
Sr. Mary Chimalizeni, Provincial Superior of the Daughters of Wisdom in Malawi and an ASEC-SLDI alumnae acknowledged ASEC for providing an opportunity to acquire knowledge in policies a resource that many congregations lack. Emphasizing their Charism of reaching out to wounded humanity in education, health, pastoral, and social work, Sr. Mary explained how the workshop equips them to be better stewards, unifying procedures for more effective service.
The success of this workshop is anticipated to have a transformative impact on the congregations, enabling them to excel in their ministries and serve the people entrusted to them with greater efficacy.
