AN OPEN MESSAGE TO MALAWIAN STUDENTS : LET THE FIRE STOP

Dear students of Malawi,

We need to talk.

Lately, something painful has been resurfacing in our schools ;burning classrooms, hostels, offices, and laboratories whenever disagreements arise. This trend is spreading again like fire carried by the mwela winds… and it is breaking our hearts.

Not because buildings are expensive.
Not because government is inconvenienced.
But because the fire is destroying your own future.

Let’s speak honestly, shall we?

When you burn your school, YOU suffer first. YOU!

1. Your dreams are delayed.
Schools close. Lessons stop. Exam prep is interrupted. While other students keep moving forward, you remain behind… not because of your intelligence, but because of one night of anger. And then we spend time hating other schools for performing well. “Eee amawauzila mayeso amene aja kuti azikhoza”. Noo dummy. You destroyed your future with a single match stick.

2. You destroy the opportunities meant for YOU.
Those labs, libraries, dorms, and classrooms were built for your benefit. Malawi doesn’t have unlimited resources. What burns today may take years to rebuild . These are years you don’t have.

3. You carry a record that can follow you for life.
Arson is a crime. Even being suspected can affect your selection, college chances, and job opportunities. That one emotional moment may sit in your shadow forever. Basi muzatchuke ndi yoti graduates from your school ndi yovuta zoona?

4. You hurt your younger brothers and sisters.
The ones coming after you will find broken schools, lack of space, and poor facilities. These are consequences of a fire they never lit.

5. And most of all: Fire solves NOTHING.
If you are unhappy with food, rules, or management — burning the school won’t fix it.
It only makes the situation worse and closes the very doors you want to be opened.

You deserve better . I know. We have been there . All of us. But burning your school takes you further away from “better.”

You deserve good classrooms. We know!
You deserve fair treatment. Thats common knowledge
You deserve a safe place to learn. Who doesnt ?

But change comes from speaking up, writing grievances, organizing yourselves respectfully, using prefects, student bodies, parents, and authorities.

Not from destroying the little we have.

Malawi needs your brilliance. Not your anger.
Your future needs your focus . Not your fire.
Your family needs your success . Not your expulsion.

To students across Malawi:
Let this be the generation that ends school arson once and for all.

Let this be the generation that chooses dialogue over destruction, wisdom over rage, and a brighter future over a burning one.

You are the leaders of tomorrow. Act like it today.

KODI MWAPAKULA KALE??

Cases of defilement in Malawi are on the rise. About 1 in 5 girls have experienced sexual violence before the age of 18. This is increasingly putting underage girls at risk of getting pregnant, contracting sexually transmitted diseases, and dropping out of school.

Almost 35% of teens are getting pregnant across Malawi, especially in lakeshore areas such as Mangochi and Salima.
Over 62.2% of sexual perpetrators are men over the age of 30 years. This group of men is more likely to be financially stable and might be taking advantage of underage girls.

Men of Tomorrow, (MOTO-Malawi) would like to warn boys, young men, and older men to refrain from engaging sexually with underage girls. Before you engage sexually with any girl, please ask them their age or let them show you their National ID "Chiphaso chauzika." Ignorance of her age is not a defense in a court of law.

On November 23, 2024, LUANAR's Bunda campus buzzed with energy as MOTO Malawi and FPAM hosted a captivating Men’s Conference. Under the theme “Mamuna ndi Mkabudula,” the event aimed to address critical issues like HIV and mental health, drawing in hundreds of male students.

Attendees included Lilongwe City Mayor, Her Worship, Esther Sagawa, Dean of Students Dr. Ronny Mvula, MOTO Members, FPAM representatives and male students from main campus, City and NRC campus.

Dr. Mvula raised concerns about rising disciplinary issues and poor academic performance among male students. “Most disciplinary cases are of male students”he stressed. He also praised the organizers of the conference, noting that it is the first of its kind at the university. “This conference is timely, as young men are facing various challenges and need the opportunity to share experiences with other male students,” he added.

Dr. Mackson Zephaniah, the District Medical Officer, highlighted the government’s efforts to reduce HIV rates and improve mental health services for men. “Men need to seek help and be proactive about their health,” he advised.

Dr. Steven Mlangiza, from MOTO Malawi, challenged stereotypes of masculinity, emphasizing the importance of positive male role models.

Meanwhile, the guest of honour Her Worship Mayor Sagawa encouraged students to avoid behaviours that could harm their future, such as drug use and risky sexual practices. She emphasized that male students need to build their financial stamina. “Brains and money are what women look for in men, just so you know,” she tipped the students.

The conference featured engaging discussions on coping with mental health issues, with FPAM’s representative, Vincent Sinda introducing new HIV prevention methods like PREP and PEP.

This impactful event not only sparked essential conversations but also laid the groundwork for future initiatives, highlighting the need for men’s health awareness in Malawi.

Men of Tomorrow Malawi and FPAM conducts First Men's Outreach Campaign in Mitundu

Mitundu, Lilongwe – On November 23, 2024, Men of Tomorrow (MOTO) Malawi, in collaboration with the Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM), hosted the inaugural men's outreach campaign at the Mitundu Primary School grounds. This landmark event focused on crucial issues impacting men's health, specifically the prevention of HIV/AIDS and mental health challenges.

The community outreach program attracted a diverse audience, including village heads, counsellors, pastors, headteachers, bar owners, and men and boys from Mitundu. MOTO Malawi and FPAM expressed concern over the increasing trend of new HIV infections in Lilongwe and across Malawi, pointing out that men often remain underserved in health outreach efforts.

During the campaign, Group Village head Mitundu emphasized the need for targeted health policies, stating, “Men do not have frequent contacts with the health system, yet we are responsible for making health decisions for our families.” The event highlighted a significant knowledge gap, as many men were unaware of Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV prevention. FPAM provided essential information on HIV testing, PrEP, PEP, and distributed condoms, with one participant remarking, “I have never heard about PrEP until today, and I am sure that many men in my area are in the same situation.”

Addressing another pressing concern, MOTO Malawi discussed the alarming rise in su***de rates, which have reportedly increased by 20% since 2023, with men accounting for nine out of ten such cases. During the meeting, participants cited several contributing factors, including drug and substance abuse, lack of supportive relationships, the absence of dedicated spaces for men to discuss their issues, the pressures of being the family provider and feeling neglected by government initiatives.

In response to these challenges, the attendees proposed several solutions to mitigate rising su***de rates. Suggestions included fostering peer support among men, establishing dedicated men-only clinics for discussing health and personal issues, and urging the government to implement outreach programs specifically targeting men's health.
MOTO Malawi assured participants that it recognizes and is actively addressing the challenges they face, including ongoing engagement with governmental bodies to prioritize men's health in policies and outreach campaigns.

Additionally, the event illuminated gaps in men's knowledge regarding family planning methods. Although participants expressed a willingness to accompany their wives to family planning and antenatal clinics, some voiced discomfort with aspects of antenatal care, particularly during songs and dancing.

The success of this outreach campaign marks a significant step forward in addressing men's health issues in Malawi, with MOTO Malawi and FPAM committed to continuing these vital conversations in the community.
