White Ribbon Alliance Malawi

White Ribbon Alliance Malawi White Ribbon Alliance Malawi is working to support the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality through advocacy to promote midwifery.

WRA Malawi was established in 2002 to support the reduction of maternal and newborn mortality, which was understood even then to be connected to the overall shortage of midwives. WRA Malawi is dedicated to holding the Government of Malawi to its commitment to strengthen human resources for health, including accelerating training and recruitment of health professionals to fill all available positio

ns in the health sector and add new positions when necessary. Recent research commissioned by WRA Malawi revealed that 20,217 additional midwives are needed to reach the WHO recommended โ€œpopulation to midwife ratioโ€ of 175:1. With only 3,420 bedside midwives working for a minimum of 75% of the time in the entire country, the midwife shortage can easily be categorized as a maternal, newborn health crisis.

They do more than support safe pregnancies and childbirth โ€” they help prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce unsafe abortions, curb mother-to-child transmission of HIV, and minimize unnecessary Caesarean sections.

By investing in midwives, we are investing in healthier families, stronger communities, and a better future for all.

Minister of Health and Sanitation, Madalitso Baloyi, says government plans to recruit more midwives to enhance the delivery of maternal health services in the country.

Baloyi made the remarks in Mzimba District during the commemorations of this yearโ€™s International Day of the Midwife.

The Minister commended midwives in the country for the excellent work they are doing despite the various challenges they face in the line of duty.

She was quick to acknowledge the need to employ more midwives to further improve maternal health services, further urging various stakeholders to support the welfare of midwives by investing in their training and financial resources.

The theme for this year's commemorations is โ€œOne Million More Midwives.โ€
