Young Women in Active Politics project
Young Women in Active Politics (YWAP) is a 3 year project (2018- 2020) being led by #DanChurchAid in #Malawi with funding from the #European Union (EU). The project is being implemented by local partners, #Women Legal Resource Centre (WOLREC) and the #Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD). The is project is aimed at improving the capacity and confidence of young females (15 to 35 years) to participate actively and meaningfully in politics and political parties of their choice. Additionally, the project is meant to strengthen spaces for increased participation and leadership of young women as decision makers in the political party structures.
In its second year of implementation, the project has managed to inspire 69 young women who were not in active in politics to attempt contesting at local government elections in the just ended 2019 Tripartite Elections. Of these it has contributed to the election of the first ever female parliamentary in Dowa North East, Eliza Chulu. Additionally, 2 young women were elected councillors.
The project is working closely with the #50-50 Management agency, #Youth Decide Campaign 2019, The Ministry of Gender, #Malawi Parliament, Universities, and other interested institutions.
Currently, the project is being implemented in, Rumphi, Mzimba, Dowa, Ntchisi, Neno and Nsanje.
