Consortium members, stakeholders and partners held the first Steering Committee meeting for the National Youth Symposium on Public Debt 2026. Discussions focused on priorities, coordination and next steps. Our commitment is to ensure young people especially young women have a real voice in shaping Malawi’s public debt conversations and development future.

Our Guest of Honour said it best. Our first SheTalks of the year was a day to remember and we were honoured to create a safe space for young women and girls as we begin to map a way forward to Confront Digital Violence and Claim our Digital Rights.

Thank you to all the panellists and relevant stakeholders for sharing their expertise and reminding us that we’re not alone in this fight. And to our lovely participants, thank you for showing up authentically- for sharing your stories and your joy with us. You reminded us why spaces like these are so integral for movement building and we promise, this is only the beginning.

Widely known as Malawi’s first Female President, Joyce Banda’s commitment to service extends beyond her tenure in public office.

She founded and directed diverse businesses and organisations with the aim of advancing rural development and improving the lives of women and children. Her leadership emphasises the importance of economic empowerment to uplift those who exist on the margins of society.

On an international level, she is widely recognised for her commitment to champion women’s rights in Malawi and beyond, even serving as a member of the Global Leaders Council for Reproductive Health.

As a woman who has worn many hats, we are inspired by her dedication to pave a new way forward for a better Malawi and a better Africa. She reminds us that we cannot afford to leave anyone behind in our activism because we have a moral obligation to each other. ‎

Gender equality cannot exist only in policies and public statements while girls and women remain excluded from decision making spaces.
In Malawi, many girls and women continue to face exclusion due to patriarchal norms, stigma and unequal power structures that limit their participation in Sexual and Reproductive Health decisions including abortion care. True participation means more than being represented; it means being heard, trusted and given equal power to influence decisions that affect their bodies and lives.

Emma Gausi is a governance expert
and acting Country Representative for NDI Malawi, leading multi-country programs on democratic accountability and civic engagement across Southern Africa.
Her recent work focuses on public debt transparency, helping civil society turn complex fiscal issues into actionable advocacy and policy dialogue. She is particularly interested in how debt governance intersects with democratic accountability and sustainable development financing in emerging economies.
