Building trust, engaging communities, and protecting futures.
The RPMEL Coordinator was proud to participate in an HPV vaccination campaign at Kawale
Primary School in Lilongwe as part of the Global Health Corps Africa Leadership Accelerator
Fellowship coalition project.
The initiative aimed to strengthen awareness and uptake of the HPV vaccine and cervical
cancer through a community-centered approach that engaged leaders, caregivers, and
learners before the vaccination exercise.
Prior to the vaccination day, dialogue sessions were conducted with community leaders,
parents, and caregivers to provide accurate information on HPV, cervical cancer prevention,
and the importance of vaccination, while also creating space to address questions, myths,
and misconceptions.
Using Human-Centered Design (HCD) principles, the campaign prioritized listening to
community perspectives and tailoring communication approaches to ensure that
information was accessible, relatable, and responsive to the needs of the community.
During the school engagement session, approximately 949 girls were reached with age-appropriate information on HPV and vaccines, and 100 girls received the HPV vaccine on-site.
This initiative demonstrates the importance of collaboration in advancing adolescent health and rights. By working together with communities, schools, health workers, and young leaders, we can strengthen trust in public health interventions and improve access to life-saving health services for young people.
Together, we continue working towards a future where every young person has access to accurate information and quality sexual and reproductive health services.
