UNV Malawi

UNV Malawi Official page of the United Nations Volunteers programme in Malawi. Based in Bonn, Germany, UNV is active in around 130 countries every year.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. Volunteerism is a powerful means of engaging people in tackling development challenges, and it can transform the pace and nature of development. Volunteerism benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer by strengthening trust, solidarity and

reciprocity among citizens, and by purposefully creating opportunities for participation. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for recognition of volunteers, working with partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing an increasing number and diversity of volunteers, including experienced UN Volunteers, throughout the world. UNV embraces volunteerism as universal and inclusive, and recognizes volunteerism in its diversity as well as the values that sustain it: free will, commitment, engagement and solidarity. UNV, with Field Units in 86 countries, is represented worldwide through the offices of the United Nations Development Programme.

From volunteering in a post-conflict environment to leading impactful development work, this is the power of service.

Fenella Frost, a former United Nations Volunteers volunteer, reflects on her experience serving in Kosovo following the war.

As part of a civil registration initiative for the country’s first post-conflict elections, she led a diverse team of national and international volunteers to successfully register an entire district’s population within just six months.

For her, it was more than a role, it was an opportunity to contribute to rebuilding a community and to grow as a young development professional.

Her story is a reminder that volunteerism can place you at the heart of meaningful change, even in the most complex environments.

Meet Joyce, a former volunteer who supported communications with UNICEF Malawi.

Through her work, Joyce contributed to telling real stories that matter, from managing social media platforms to documenting human interest stories and supporting digital content.

Her experience not only strengthened her skills in communication, photography, and videography, but also allowed her to collaborate with diverse teams and grow both professionally and personally.

Stories like Joyce’s remind us that volunteerism is not just about giving back. It’s also about growth, learning, and creating meaningful impact, and the faces behind it deserve to be seen and heard.
