UNV Malawi

UNV Malawi Official page of the United Nations Volunteers programme in Malawi. Based in Bonn, Germany, UNV is active in around 130 countries every year.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. Volunteerism is a powerful means of engaging people in tackling development challenges, and it can transform the pace and nature of development. Volunteerism benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer by strengthening trust, solidarity and

reciprocity among citizens, and by purposefully creating opportunities for participation. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for recognition of volunteers, working with partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing an increasing number and diversity of volunteers, including experienced UN Volunteers, throughout the world. UNV embraces volunteerism as universal and inclusive, and recognizes volunteerism in its diversity as well as the values that sustain it: free will, commitment, engagement and solidarity. UNV, with Field Units in 86 countries, is represented worldwide through the offices of the United Nations Development Programme.

Volunteering should be open to everyone. That's the message behind a recent meeting between UNV Malawi and the Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA) in Salima District. The conversation centered on one goal: connecting more persons with disabilities to UN Volunteer opportunities. MACODA is on board and ready to help grow that representation within the UNV talent pool.

What does it actually take to become a UN Volunteer? That was the focus of an awareness session UNV Malawi recently ran in Salima District with Optimum Youth Organization. Attendees walked through everything: how volunteering works, who qualifies, how to register on the Unified Volunteering Platform (UVP), and how to build a profile that stands out.

From Iran to Malawi - Zahra Vaziri has spent her UN Volunteer assignment making real change happen.

As an Associate Programme Officer with UNHCR Malawi, Zahra has supported livelihoods, shelter, and climate-smart agriculture for refugees and host communities in and around Dzaleka Refugee Camp, bridging emergency relief with long-term development.

This is what it means to be a UN Volunteer.

When Tropical Cyclone Freddy tore through Southern Malawi in 2023, it left more than 2.2 million people reeling, many of them women farmers who had already endured the destruction of Tropical Storms Ana and Gombe. In Phalombe's TA Chiwalo, recovery looks like this: solar-powered irrigation giving women farmer groups the means to expand their fields and reclaim time lost to manual watering.

UN Volunteer Foster Bikoko is supporting the UN Women's Women Resilience to Disaster programme, in partnership with the Government of Australia, which is putting climate-smart, gender-responsive solutions at the centre of recovery across Blantyre, Phalombe and Zomba.

From China to Malawi - during her gap year. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³

Runnan Shao serves as a Food System Analyst with WFP Malawi. She works with smallholder farmers on sorghum, cowpea, and sesame, from field visits to stakeholder meetings, helping connect farmers to markets and strengthen food security.

As a young volunteer stepping into her very first job, the adjustment was not always easy. But Runnan showed up, leaned in, and found her footing, one field visit, one conversation, one initiative at a time.

We are grateful for the support of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Malawi in making this contribution to Malawi's food security possible.

Today, UNV Executive Coordinator Toily Kurbanov presented the UN Volunteers 2025 Annual Report at the UN Development Programme Executive Board ( ).

In 2025, 17,000 UN Volunteers supported the UN system - the highest scale in the UN's history. UNV placed as many UN Volunteers in one year as it used to in two years combined just at the beginning of this decade.

Representing 182 nationalities, with the youngest volunteer at 18 and the oldest at 80, UN Volunteers in 2025 were truly representative of the world they serve.
Here in Malawi, we are proud to be part of this global movement. πŸ‡²πŸ‡Ό
