Warning signals are everywhere: the past eleven years have been the hottest on record, with rising temperatures, degraded land, collapsing ecosystems, and vanishing biodiversity harming health, homes, and food security. Malawi is already feeling the strain-land degradation, deforestation, soil erosion, and millions facing food insecurity as climate shocks intensify.

Across Malawi, the UN Country Team is working with partners on ecosystem restoration, renewable energy, irrigation, afforestation, and sustainable livelihoods-building resilience and protecting biodiversity.

Together, we must protect forests, expand clean energy, and help communities adapt and be resilient. Development and nature must move forward side by side.

Today, on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, we honor the courage and dedication of those who serve in some of the world’s most fragile environments.

This year’s theme, “Invest in Peace,” reminds us that peacekeeping remains one of the most effective tools to respond to conflict- supporting political solutions, preventing escalation, protecting civilians, monitoring ceasefires, enabling humanitarian assistance, clearing landmines, and more.

first contributed troops to UN Peacekeeping in 1994. Today it has 770 uniformed personnel in Africa.

Despite reduced resources, UN Peacekeepers continue to stand as a beacon of hope for millions. Let’s recommit to investing in peace, because peace is the foundation for a better future. 💙🕊️

“Being who you are should never be a crime.”

On Sunday’s International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the significant progress made over recent decades in advancing equal rights for LGBTIQ+ people, yet warned:

“Around the world, we see concerted efforts to roll back these human rights — restricting freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, stoking hate, targeting human rights defenders, and cutting funding for essential services.”

He stressed the UN’s commitment to stand with all members of the human family, without discrimination of any kind, and called on everyone to uphold safety, dignity and equality for all.
