Ujamaa Pamodzi Africa

Ujamaa Pamodzi Africa Ujamaa Pamodzi implements evidence-based Prevention and Trauma support programmes in Malawi.

We envision a society free from violence against children and women. We are currently implementing a countrywide scale-up targeting 5 million learners by 2030. Ujamaa Pamodzi Africa is a non-governmental organization working to prevent violence against women and children in Malawi. Ujamaa Africa started in Nairobi, Kenya and Malawi was selected as the second nation in Africa to implement its progr

ams, alongside a research study. It is a comprehensive sexual and gender-based violence prevention organization through the use of the Empowerment Transformation Training (ETT) as well as the No Means No “IMpower” violence prevention training. Empowerment Transformation Training (ETT) programme is a successful and rigorously tested SGBV prevention approach that targets adolescents and young women and young men in schools and communities. Under this programme Ujamaa works to provide simple, effective, memorable and empowerment–self-defense training to women and children in schools, churches, mosques & CBOs in Malawi. ETT has two prongs that complement each other; the Girls' Empowerment Self-Defense (GESD) programme and the Boys’ transformation training program, also known as the Hero in Me programme. External evaluation by international academic researchers including from, John Hopkins (JHU) and Stanford University, Karolinska Institute, University of Nebraska among others, prove that the ETT is highly successful
Through the partnerships the organization has trained and deployed over 120 ETT/ IMpower instructors in the 11 impact districts; Lilongwe, Salima, Dedza, Machinga, Mzimba, Nsanje, Dowa, Nchtisi, Nkhatabay and Mangochi, reaching out to over 150,000 girls and boys across Malawi.

Celebrating the 2025 Milestones!!!!

In 2025, Ujamaa Pamodzi Africa achieved major milestone scaling our Empowerment Transformation Training (ETT) programme from 6 to 12 districts across Malawi; Salima, Mangochi, Dedza, Lilongwe, Kasungu, Machinga, and added Blantyre, Zomba, Balaka, Ntcheu, Dowa, and Mzimba.

Guided by our five year Transition To Scale Strategy, we continued our mission to end GBV, and strengthen child protection systems in schools and communities.

Our progress;
👩🏽‍🏫 2,927 teachers trained
🎒 585,400 learners trained
🏫 1,449 schools impacted.

We are redefining what it means to deliver effective GBV prevention programming at scale. Leveraging on teacher clusters, digital toolkits, innovative cascading models, and digital mapping, we are ensuring the evidence-based ETT delivery is more efficient than ever.

This impact is only made possible through our partnership with Teacher Champions across Malawi via the Malawi Ministry of Education. These educators are not just teachers; they are first responders in child protection, ensuring the ETT aligns with National Education Standards and Malawi’s Vision 2063.

We also extend our deepest gratitude our funders and partner s: Cartier Foundation, UNICEF, SAS-Philanthropy, Trocaire, Grand Challenges Canada, and Jasmine Foundation. Your investment is transforming the child protection and SGBV prevention landscape in Malawi.

🔮 Looking ahead to 2026, Ujamaa Pamodzi plans to scale ETT to Mzimba North, Nkhotakota, Mchinji, and Ntchisi.

Together, we celebrate progress — and recommit to building safer schools, stronger communities, and protected futures. 💙

Globally, one in three women and girls experience gender-based violence in their lifetime. In Kenya and Malawi, Ujamaa is tackling this issue by empowering girls to identify abuse and defend themselves, while teaching boys to challenge harmful attitudes and behaviors.

In Malawian and Kenyan schools where Ujamaa operates, reports of r**e, teenage pregnancies, and school dropouts have decreased by half.

Since 2024, Cartier Philanthropy has supported Ujamaa’s expansion into Malawi, where one in four girls aged 15–19 reports their first sexual encounter as forced. Partnering directly with the Ministry of Education, Ujamaa Pamodzi’s program will reach over 1 million boys and girls in Malawian public schools.

🔍 SGBV Myths

It is a myth that it's only violence when the victim has scars and bruises on their bodies. The reality is that violence can take many forms, such as psychological, physical, or sexual actions, all of which can rob a person of their freedom.

Let's raise awareness and support survivors in all forms. 💜
