Operation Smile, in partnership with of Health, Ghana and Ships, recently convened a two-day National Surgical Dialogue in Koforidua under the theme “Bridging the Gap: Policy, Practice and People in Ghana’s Surgical Journey.”

This high-level engagement brought together policymakers, health professionals, researchers and development partners to address critical issues shaping Ghana’s Surgical, Obstetric, Trauma, and Anaesthesia (SOTA) care. The dialogue created a collaborative platform for participants to share innovative practices, exchange experiences, and reflect on how Ghana can accelerate access to safe, timely surgical care. Conversations spanned the development and implementation of sustainable national surgical policies, new approaches to financing and ensuring that people remain at the center of policy and practice.

By convening diverse stakeholders – including the Ministry of Health, Health Service, professional colleges, Health Organization, Health Insurance Authority of Ghana and other institutions – the event demonstrated a shared commitment to building stronger surgical systems. This collaboration highlights the power of partnership-driven solutions in advancing equitable access to safe, effective care for all Ghanaians.

Behind every photo is a story worth telling. At Operation Smile, our photographers capture more than images — they capture care, courage, and transformation. Through their lens, we see moments of hope and dignity, honoring the patients, families and volunteers who make our work possible.

As volunteer photographer Osvaldo Godina says, “It’s not just about taking a picture; it’s about becoming part of the moment, feeling what they feel. Each image connects emotionally with viewers and honors the struggle, hope and transformation.”

This Day, we’re proud to spotlight five photographers whose work reveals the heart of our mission. From moments of courage on surgery day to the quiet strength of families, their images celebrate resilience and human connection.

Infants born with cleft conditions are 9 times more likely to die within their first year of life than other infants. Feeding challenges contribute significantly to this risk. Without early support, many of these children face a higher risk of malnutrition and may be unable to safely undergo any surgery.
To meet this need, Operation Smile has prioritized nutrition as a critical part of our comprehensive cleft care model, working alongside communities and health care workers to deliver locally tailored nutrition interventions and support for our patients and their families. We join the rest of the world in this year's Breastfeeding week (1-7 August 2025)

02/07/2025

July is Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month.
we seek to:
Increasing access to surgical care: Operation Smile works alongside local health systems to break down barriers and bring high-quality care closer to home, starting with cleft surgery and comprehensive care.
locally led, globally supported: We are permanently based in 37 countries, supporting locally driven solutions that meet the needs of each community.
A global leader in cleft care: For over four decades, Operation Smile has advanced gold standard surgical care and comprehensive, patient-centered cleft care in partnership with local health systems.
Training as a force multiplier: We invest in education to expand the surgical workforce, build capacity, and sustainably scale access to care.
Comprehensive care is key to lasting impact: From speech therapy and nutrition to oral health and psychosocial support, we ensure patients receive the care they need to thrive.
Shifting perceptions: We’re working to change the narrative around cleft conditions by increasing awareness, confronting harmful myths, and championing the dignity and a future full of possibilities for every child.
Bold, innovative approaches: We apply research, technology, and cross-sector collaboration to increase access to surgical care.
Care closer to home: Our goal is to tackle the barriers to access to care between families and the life-changing care they need.
