Today at Msupadzi Primary School, we conducted cooking demonstrations aimed at promoting the preparation and consumption of nutritious foods using locally available ingredients.

Participants learned how to prepare a variety of nutritious meals and snacks, including:
🥘 One-pot dish
🎃 Pumpkin doughnuts
🍠 Sweet potato doughnuts
🥣 Rice porridge mixed with soya (Nsinjiro)
🥚 Kholowa wa mazira
🌱 A snack made from a mixture of sweet potatoes and beans

These demonstrations are helping communities and learners in primary school improve dietary diversity, enhance nutrition knowledge, and adopt healthy eating practices using affordable, locally available foods.

The project is being implemented in Lilongwe and Mchinji with support from Irish Aid through Concern Worldwide.

Through support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), channelled through GIZ, the Civil Society Organisation Nutrition Alliance (CSONA), convened an open dialogue with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) participating in the Food Systems Transformative Initiative (TI) in Dedza, Chikwawa, and Mzimba districts.

The dialogue created a platform for CSOs to share experiences, reflect on progress made under the initiative, and discuss challenges that continue to hinder their meaningful participation in food systems transformation efforts. Participants also explored practical solutions and identified key actions needed to strengthen civil society engagement in building more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive food systems.

Representatives from the Dedza District Council participated in the discussions, providing valuable insights and supporting efforts to develop a collective way forward.

The Food Systems Transformative Initiative is helping to strengthen the capacity of CSOs and communities to actively contribute to food systems transformation, ensuring that local voices and priorities remain at the centre of sustainable development efforts.

News alert!!!

*A district dialogue on FISP* - Mangoochi District.

We have just wrapped-up a community scorecard exercise in Mangochi district where a Series of community scorecard activities were done in 6 T/As: Nankumba, Lulanga, Hamis Makanjira, Chowe, Chilipa and Chiunda. The scorecard primarily focused on assessing the performance and impact of the current FISP program in the context of ensuring the provisions towards Right to Food as well as contributing to ending hunger and malnutrition.

Funded by the BMZ through WHH Malawi - Welthungerhilfe, CSONA through the Nutrition Smart Communities project, Centre for Social accountability and Transparency (CISAT) through the Right to Food project and CARE through the Restore project collaborated to implement the exercise.

The exercise directly engaged over 150 community beneficiaries in categories of Men, Women, Youths, Religious leaders and local leaders in soliciting experiences and issues from the recent FISP program. The interface brought together both sides to dialogue on performance issues and develop actionable items for improved service delivery.

Major issues that came out included: delayed distribution of farm inputs vs farming calendar, irregularities in the purchasing process such as back door purchase activities by vendors, limited knowledge and awareness about complaint redress and safeguarding mechanism, exploitation of buyers by sellers where extra money was demanded, limited access to farm inputs by the targeted beneficiaries due to limited number of selling deports within communities, etc

These issues will further be discussed at national level for high-level consideration and improved planning in future FISP programs.

At CSONA, we believe advocacy should lead to real change in people’s lives and this is exactly why we continue pushing for increased investment in nutrition and stronger accountability in how resources are allocated and used.

Working alongside parliamentary nutrition champions and the SUN Civil Society Network, we have continued engaging decision-makers to ensure nutrition remains a priority and that support reaches the districts and communities where it is needed most.

But beyond policies and budgets, this work is about children, families, teachers, and communities. One teacher featured in the video captures it best: “Because when I have healthy kids, my teaching will be more effective.”

This is the impact we want to see: healthier children, stronger learning environments, and communities that are better supported to thrive.

Today we joined the National Multi-Sector Nutrition Coordinating Committee meeting as part of our continued commitment to ending hunger and malnutrition in Malawi.

The meeting brought together different stakeholders to share updates and progress on nutrition interventions, including nutrition-sensitive agriculture, nutrition cluster activities, and school health and nutrition programmes.

We were also excited to present the Nutrition Smart Community Project, financed by BMZ and implemented through WHH in partnership with Kusamala Institute of Agriculture and Ecology. We shared some of the project’s successes, lessons learned, and our vision moving forward in building healthier and nutrition-smart communities. Partnerships and collaboration continue to play an important role in creating sustainable solutions for communities across Malawi.

Through the European Union-funded FOCUS Project, jointly implemented by the Civil Society Organisation Nutrition Alliance-CSONA, Self Help Africa, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, and CADECOM, CSONA has partnered with the Health Promotion Division of the Ministry of Health to pretest Information, Education& Communication (IEC) materials aimed at raising awareness on food fortification in Malawi.

The project is being implemented in four districts: Dedza, Balaka, Thyolo, and Mulanje.

Among its key objectives, the FOCUS Project seeks to improve community knowledge and uptake of food fortification initiatives. The pretesting exercise is an important step in ensuring that communities are actively involved in the development process and that the messages are relevant, clear, and responsive to the needs of the people they are intended to serve.

CSONA is pleased to participate in the launch of the Global Hunger Index Report, hosted by Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide Malawi, with support from BMZ and Irish Aid.

The theme, “From Dialogue to Implementation on Zero Hunger,” highlights a critical reality: while progress is being made, it remains fragile. Achieving Zero Hunger requires stronger local-level commitments and collective action that moves beyond dialogue into implementation.

CSONA remains committed to working alongside partners such as Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe in strengthening food systems and supporting interventions that contribute to a hunger-free Malawi.
