The National Association of Young People Living with HIV (NAYPLHIV) also known as Y+, was established in 2014 and it was formally launched on 2nd May, 2014 at T.A. Kabudula in Lilongwe with the aim of mobilizing young people living with the virus to come up with one voice to address issues that affect them.
The Association was registered on World AIDS Day 1st December 2017 and can legally operate under the laws of Malawi.
The NAYPLHIV is a member of the Malawi Network of people living with HIV and AIDS (MANET+). Currently Y+ has a Board of Trustees comprising of 7 young people of which 3 are young men and 4 are young women. In addition there are four ex-officio board members namely Coalition of Women Living with HIV (COWLHA), Southern African AIDS Trust (SAT), MANET+ and National AIDS Commission. MANET+ is the secretariat for the Association until Y Plus secretariat with a substantive staff complement is established and is functional.
Y+ recognizes that young people living with HIV can be categorized into four distinct categories of early adolescents (11-14 years), middle adolescents (15-17 years) late adolescents (18-21 years) and young adults of 22-35 years. Most early adolescents are in primary schools, most middle adolescents are in secondary education while those in the late adolescent鈥檚 stage are either in college or doing tertiary education. Many are also out of school although the association believes that most of its members should be in school. It is also important to note the high unemployment rate among young adults. Its Plan is aligned to the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy II (MGDS II) and is expected to form the foundation upon which all future planning programs for the Association will be based. Previously, NAYPLHIV has relied on the direction given by MANET+ as a coordinating body and financier for its operations.
