African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) AFIDEP helps to bridge the gap between research, policy and practice in development efforts in Africa

AFIDEP is a non-profit organization whose mission is to facilitate the creation, translation, and utilization of research evidence for policy formulation and resource allocation in Africa. AFIDEP seeks to foster consistent availability of timely, relevant and accessible evidence from credible sources to support policy making and implementation of effective development programs on the continent. Th

e Institute will strengthen efforts to alleviate poverty and improve the quality of human capital by generating and promoting utilization of evidence on the inter-linkages between population change, public health, education and environmental challenges facing Africa. The primary target audiences for the Institute’s work are policy makers and development partners operating at national, regional, and international levels. One key element of AFIDEP’s work will involve helping policy makers, including those in the ministries of planning and finance, as well as foreign aid agencies, to have a clearer understanding of the population growth factor in health and development. In particular, AFIDEP will promote funding and adoption of effective strategies for enabling couples fulfill their childbearing ideals and reduce the high levels of unmet need for family planning and other reproductive health services in Africa.

What does it take to advance Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (ASRHR)?

Nepal’s experience shows that meaningful progress is possible when strong political commitment, evidence-informed policies, and sustained action come together.

The country has made significant strides in strengthening ASRHR, offering valuable lessons for policymakers, practitioners, and advocates across the Global South. But what drove this progress, and what challenges remain?

Did You Know?

In many African countries, girls who stay in school longer are significantly less likely to experience adolescent pregnancy. Evidence shows that education is not just a learning issue — it is also a health, gender equality, and economic development intervention.

That’s why evidence-informed policies that keep girls in school can have ripple effects across entire communities.

African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP)’s Board and Management extend our warmest congratulations to the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) on 25 years of excellence and impact.

This milestone reflects APHRC’s remarkable contribution to advancing research, evidence-informed policymaking, and sustainable development across Africa. Over the years, AFIDEP has been privileged to collaborate with APHRC in strengthening the continent’s research and policy ecosystem. We deeply value our partnership, the shared learning, and our collective commitment to improving lives through evidence and innovation.

We also recognise APHRC’s critical role in nurturing talent and developing leaders in the research community. Several members of the AFIDEP team contributed to building APHRC in its formative years, and have since grown into leaders driving evidence-informed development across Africa — a testament to the institution’s transformative influence.

As you celebrate this milestone and reflect on the growth, lessons, and impact of the last 25 years, we celebrate with you. We look forward to deepening our collaboration in advancing Africa’s development agenda.

Congratulations once again on this momentous achievement and for building a truly African-led institution. We wish APHRC even greater success and impact in the years ahead.

No country can sustainably develop on the foundation of weak health systems.
Domestic health financing is not simply a social expenditure — it is a strategic investment in human capital, economic resilience, and national prosperity. Countries that invest in the health of their people invest in the strength and stability of their future.

Through the Strengthening Capacity for Evidence Use in Health Policy (SECURE) Health programme, African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) and partners worked to strengthen evidence-informed decision-making in Africa’s health sector by addressing barriers that limit the uptake of research evidence among policymakers and institutions.

The programme generated critical lessons on what works in strengthening the use of evidence in health policy and practice contributing to stronger systems and improved health outcomes. See more on what the programme achieved: https://bit.ly/4tZvEQ4
