Are you tired of rising input costs, degraded land, and dependency on supply chains that fail? Try compost. Some people say permaculture is only for vegetables or herbs. They say you cannot grow staple grains like maize without synthetic fertilizer. The photos disagree.
This is what regenerative agriculture looks like for a staple food crop. If you have been told that African smallholders cannot feed themselves without inorganic inputs, this field says otherwise. Permaculture makes it possible.

The Give-Back Policy is the foundational covenant of our Permaculture Food Security Project, designed to ensure the initiative's long-term sustainability and community-wide impact through a cycle of shared prosperity. In the pictures are some of the clubs that received livestock 11 months ago. This time around, they have given back by returning a specified number of healthy offspring to the project. This returned stock has been redistributed to new, pre-selected farmers and clubs, allowing the initial gift to multiply and spread. Crucially, the obligation extends beyond the animals themselves; original recipients are also responsible for passing on the training and knowledge they received, creating a peer-to-peer ripple effect of mentorship. This process transforms a single act of giving into a self-perpetuating system that builds ecological health, nutritional security, and economic dignity across the community.

Here at Mtanira Community Library, Saturdays are reserved for our future leaders. From 9 AM to 11 PM, our Children’s Program welcomes students in standard 3 through 5 for a morning dedicated to growth. We combine syllabus-based tutoring with fun academic competitions like spelling bees and quizzes, ensuring that learning remains engaging. However, our mission goes beyond textbooks. We also provide Bible lessons and mentorship to help these children develop strong moral values and the confidence to face life's challenges.

The need for this program runs deep in our community. Many of our students come from backgrounds where resources and safe spaces are limited. Here, they find not only educational support but also a caring environment that nurtures their whole being. Parents consistently share stories of improved behavior and self-worth, while teachers note remarkable progress in classroom participation. For these 66 children, Saturday mornings at the library are a cornerstone of their development and a source of hope for a brighter tomorrow.

PICTORIAL

Last week, we held our biannual partnership meeting with Orant Charities Africa. Together, we reviewed our joint initiatives across various projects serving the communities in Senior Chief Chakhaza’s area. As we celebrated the milestones in our collaboration, we also mapped out the next steps as we continue working hand in hand to create a sustainable impact in the communities we serve.

This year, we took Tree Planting Day to Madisi Secondary School, where our team, alongside students, staff, and volunteers from our various projects, collaborated to design a permaculture plot and plant 2,000 fruit tree seedlings. The initiative not only enhanced the school grounds but also reinforced our collective dedication to sustainable agriculture and community-led environmental stewardship.

Relocating to a new home often means starting from zero, but the story is different for Mr. Bwanali, a permaculture farmer from Chikwangula village who started with a plan. After moving to a new settlement almost a year ago, he immediately applied permaculture design to his surroundings. As of today, he has planted over 500 trees and established a tree nursery right at his doorstep.

As the pictures show, his home is transforming into a food forest; he is already enjoying the fresh fruit and the cooling shade the trees provide. Do not wait for the "right" time. You can start now. Food security and true economic empowerment begin at your own doorstep.

Today, let us redefine what it means to be resilient by looking at the Tione Village Savings and Loans group under our Economic Empowerment project. This enterprising group of women has branched out into multiple business ventures, ensuring they never have to rely on a single source of income. This season, we are proud to partner with them by providing groundnut seed loan to boost their agricultural output.

Here, we believe that when women are given the tools to succeed, the entire economy grows. We are honored to be part of their journey towards empowerment and financial independence. After all, true empowerment is about having options.
