At YASD, we believe lasting change happens when communities work together. This week, we strengthened the capacity of Fundo Youth Club in TA Chitukula, Lilongwe, through a series of practical skills trainings designed to empower young people as agents of change.

Following a two-day training in Leadership and Communication, the club also completed a two-day Goat Management training facilitated by Madam Yvonne Phiri, Livestock Officer from Lilongwe District Council. Participants gained practical knowledge in goat housing, breeding, disease prevention and control, vaccination, record keeping, and feed formulation.

As part of YASD's collective action model, the youth club will receive at least 20 goats to help them apply their new knowledge, improve livelihoods, and create sustainable economic opportunities.

The Lilongwe District Youth Officer, Mr. Peter Ben , commended YASD for investing in youth groups rather than individuals, describing the approach as a practical model of collective action that the Council intends to promote. He encouraged the young people to make full use of the diverse skills they have acquired in agroecology, leadership, communication, baking, agri-tech, and goat management to unlock future opportunities.

Village Headman Mlezi also expressed his appreciation, noting that YASD is the first organisation to implement such an initiative in the community and pledged his full support to the youth.

Together, we are proving that when young people are equipped with knowledge, resources, and a shared vision, they can transform their communities from the ground up.

This initiative falls into YASD's flagship programme of Voices of Inclusion, Collective action and Empowerment ( VOICE) financially supported by IM Swedish Development Partner Southern Africa .

What does sustainable, community-led development look like in practice?

During a field visit to TA Kachere, Dedza, the IM Swedish Development Partner Southern Africa Communications Team engaged with rights holders, youth groups, and LOGIC Champions to witness how YASD's interventions are transforming lives through skills development, economic empowerment, safeguarding, and collective action. Today, YASD welcomed IM Swedish Development Partner for a monitoring visit focused on learning, reflection, and dialogue on the progress of the VOICE Programme and how IM's core support is strengthening YASD's institutional capacity to accompany communities in driving sustainable change.

The discussions highlighted progress in strengthening collective action as a pathway to economic justice, social justice, and improved livelihoods, with communities increasingly taking the lead in addressing issues that affect their lives.

The visit continued at Fundo Youth Club in GVH Nkudzi, TA Chitukula, where 45 young people showcased their baking and agri-tech initiatives and shared how paralegal and PSEAH training is strengthening their leadership, rights awareness, and collective voice.

The monitoring visit provided an opportunity for IM Swedish Development Partner Southern Africa to engage directly with rightsholders, observe programme progress firsthand, and reflect with YASD on lessons, achievements, and opportunities for strengthening community-led impact.

We are integrating social justice, Economic justice , Gender justice and Environmental management initiatives in building urgency for the community to take Lead. Let's collaborate and work together in accelerating grassroots change.

Meaningful partnerships are built by listening, learning, and celebrating locally led solutions. During a visit to YASD intervention areas in TA Kachere, Dedza, the IM Swedish Development Partner Communications Team had the opportunity to witness how communities are driving change through the LOGIC Project and the current VOICE Programme.

At Mphuzi Hub, a platform formed through YASD's interventions that brings together members from three youth clubs and two Village Savings and Loans (VSL) groups, members proudly demonstrated the baking skills they have acquired, highlighting how the initiative is strengthening household incomes, improving livelihoods, and fostering collective action.

The visit also provided an opportunity to engage with community members trained in Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH) and paralegal services, enabling them to promote safeguarding, legal awareness, and access to justice within their communities. Conversations with two dedicated LOGIC Champions, a woman champion and a young entrepreneur, reflected the power of investing in local leadership and community ownership.

We are grateful for the continued partnership with IM Swedish Development Partner Southern Africa , whose support continues to make these community-led transformations possible.

We can break socioeconomic barriers for youth and women in the communities if we align program/project interventions to the community priorities.

Ending domestic violence is a shared responsibility. The law empowers every community member to report suspected cases of domestic violence and help protect those at risk.

Through the VOICE Programme, YASD is strengthening access to justice by building community awareness, promoting gender justice, and equipping community paralegals with the knowledge and skills needed to support vulnerable individuals and families.

Climate change may threaten livelihoods, but empowered communities can rewrite the story. These are some of the beneficiaries from TA Chitukula whose lives are being transformed through the Hlanganisa-funded Greening the Future project.

When youth and women are empowered with climate-smart agricultural knowledge and skills, they become catalysts for sustainable development within their communities. Climate-smart agriculture has the power to transform community livelihoods, enhance food security, increase productivity, and strengthen adaptability to climate shocks.

Through this initiative, YASD is promoting sustainable land management, building household resilience, and creating opportunities for economic empowerment, ensuring that communities are better prepared for a changing climate and a more sustainable future.
