CREMPA hosts Dairy Advocacy Meeting with members from Dowa.

The Central Region Milk Producers Association (CREMPA) recently organized a district-level dairy advocacy meeting in Dowa, bringing together local farmers to discuss the pressing issues facing the dairy sector. The meeting aimed to address the challenges that farmers encounter when selling their milk, as well as the factors contributing to the decline in the number of farmers participating in Milk Bulking Groups.

CREMPA Association Manager noted that while farmers in the district have benefitted from various projects and government initiatives, milk production has still seen a significant decline. This issue has raised concerns for the future of the dairy sector in the region.

Herbert Chagona, National Director of the Malawi Milk Producers Association, highlighted CREMPA’s potential to become a leading milk producer in Malawi. He emphasized the importance of the meeting as a platform to spark conversations that will drive the development of the dairy industry in the central region.

Key government officials, including Agricultural Extension Development Coordinators (AEDCs) and Assistant Veterinary Officers from Kaufulu, Bowe, Mponera, and Nambumba Extension Planning Areas (EPAs), as well as the District Animal Health and Livestock Development Officer, were also present. Their involvement underscores the collaborative effort needed to address the concerns of local farmers.

During the meeting, participants agreed to establish a district-level milk marketing taskforce to address the challenges raised and to push forward key policy issues for consideration by national decision-makers. This taskforce is expected to play a critical role in revitalizing the dairy industry in Dowa and beyond.

CREMPA hopes that this initiative will lead to meaningful improvements for farmers and ultimately boost milk production in the region.

The meeting was made possible with financial support from project that CREMPA is implementing in partnership with with funding from -IFAD partnership.

The Central Region Milk Producers Association (CREMPA) has underscored the need for authorities to empower smallholder farmers in a bid to uplift their livelihood.

The association's manager Andrew Chimalizeni made the call today after handing over 40 daily cows to Malovu and Phwadzi Cooperatives through Economic Empowerment and Financial Inclusion of Women and Youth Through Daily Agribusiness Project in Dowa District.

Chimalizeni added that smallholder farmers have the potential to do well in their farming activities but due to limited resources they are failing to make it hence the call.

According to Chimalizeni, the donation which is worth K700 million has been made available with financial support from Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) through an organization called We Effect.

Part of the daily cows will be also be distributed to farmers in Mchinji District.
