In line with the Non-Aligned Movement’s principle of promoting democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, the Malawi Chapter of the NAM Youth Organization, in partnership with local-led organizations, is spearheading initiatives that empower young people to play an active role in the country’s democratic processes.

With Malawi’s General Elections for the Presidency, Members of Parliament, and Local Councillors scheduled for 16th September this year, we are engaging youth through targeted sessions on inclusive political participation, voter accountability, and youth representation in politics.

Yesterday, in collaboration with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) and Youth Forum for National Transformation, we conducted an interactive session with young people at Mtsiriza and Mtandile constituency aimed at breaking misinformation surrounding the newly introduced Smartmatic voting system. This initiative not only enhanced trust in the electoral process but also equipped youth with accurate, verifiable information to share within their communities.

A key outcome of the session was the development of a set of youth demands, which will form the basis of a position paper to be presented to shadow Members of Parliament and Local Councillors ahead of the elections. This process ensures that young people’s voices are not only heard but also reflected in policy priorities and governance decisions.

We are reinforcing NAM’s vision of inclusive, participatory democracy while strengthening Malawi’s democratic institutions through informed, active, and responsible citizen participation.

International Peace Day 2024: Cultivating a Culture of Peace!

We have joined the NAM Youth Organization and the whole world in commemorating International Peace Day, celebrated on September 21, 2024, under the theme "Cultivating a Culture of Peace." This year's theme emphasizes that peace is not just about the absence of conflict but the continuous nurturing of justice, equity, and social harmony.

As the global community faces interconnected challenges such as economic disparities, climate change, and social unrest, it is clear that peace requires sustained, collective effort. For Africa, the concept of "cultivating" peace is particularly relevant, as the continent deals with climate-induced conflicts, political instability, and youth empowerment as key drivers of sustainable development.

Analytically, this year’s theme urges us to look at peace-building as a long-term investment in our societies. It calls for not just reactive measures but proactive actions that address the structural causes of conflict, such as inequality, resource depletion, and marginalization. By involving youth and promoting inclusive development, we can create a culture where peace thrives, offering hope for a stable and just future.

Let’s continue working together to foster a peaceful world, where justice and equity are at the forefront.

We are thrilled to have been invited and represented by our National Chapter Coordinator at the "Building Youth Capacity for Climate Action: Road to COP29" Capacity Building Training held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from August 29th to September 3rd, 2024.

This event, organized by the NAM Youth Organization (NAMYO), gathered youth leaders from across the globe to enhance their knowledge and skills on vital climate-related topics. The program featured a series of in-depth training sessions led by renowned experts in their respective fields:

Sustainable Development and Gender Equality: Led by Ms. Shamsiyya Mustafayeva, a Sustainable Development Policy Advisor and Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment Specialist, this session emphasized the critical integration of gender perspectives in sustainable development and climate action.

Water Management: Facilitated by Mr. Elnur Khalilov, a specialist in water management, this session focused on the essential role of water resources in enhancing climate resilience and promoting sustainable development.

The program also delved into discussions on the role of youth in global climate governance, underscoring the importance of young people’s active participation in shaping international climate policies. Our National Chapter Coordinator played a pivotal role in facilitating discussions on Science, Technology, and Innovation Digital Cooperation, highlighting its integral role in addressing climate change.

This capacity-building process is crucial as we prepare to amplify the voices of Malawi’s youth at COP29 this coming November. It has provided invaluable insights into how youth leaders can drive change through sustainable practices, effective resource management, and inclusive governance.

Our participation in this program is vital as it strengthens our ongoing commitment to empowering youth in climate action. We are dedicated to ensuring that the innovative solutions and perspectives of young people in Malawi are represented on the global stage. The knowledge and strategies gained from this training will be instrumental in driving impactful climate initiatives within our communities.
