From 50 Hives to a World Bank Investment

In 2018, a group of women in Nkhusu Village, Mchinji, had an idea but no track record and no funder. Mudzi Connect took the chance. A $2,251 grant bought 50 beehives and trained its members. Within six months, they harvested and sold 150 litres of honey, proof they were ready.
In 2022, we invested $12,829. They built a processing house, bought a honey press, doubled their hives, and trained 55 members to run a cooperative. Honey income soon began paying for school fees, uniforms and food at home, giving members an income of their own.
In April 2026 came the breakthrough: an $88,221 matching grant from the Government of Malawi’s World Bank-financed AGCOM project. The cooperative will grow from 104 hives to 704 and sell to a contracted buyer.

Our $15,080 has unlocked $88,221 in AGCOM funding, nearly six times our investment.

Tiyanjane didn’t need a big first grant. It needed someone to go first, and trusting communities first is what we do. Your support lets us go first.

Clean Water for Bundi! 💧

In September 2026, Bundi Community in Mzimba began drilling a borehole with co-funding from Mudzi Connect. Barely a month later, they are drinking clean, safe water.

Welcoming Mr. Thokozani Banda to Mudzi Connect Board

Mudzi Connect is delighted to welcome Mr. Thokozani Banda to our Board, effective 1st October 2026.

Mr. Thokozani is a Development Program Specialist with 16 years of experience in livelihoods, financial inclusion and economic empowerment. He has worked with World Vision International, Self Help Africa, World Relief International and the CCAP Synods. He holds an MBA and a BSc in Agriculture.

From Receiving to Giving: Our CFs Have Started Grantmaking!

A defining moment for local philanthropy in Malawi.

Since 2023, Mudzi Connect, with support from the Mott Foundation, has incubated community foundations across Malawi. Now they are moving from implementing to GRANTING.

Community Action For Development -Caford (Nkhotakota) gradually raised over K10M locally, secured our K10M match, and this month GRANTED it to complete Chanika Under-Five Clinic, serving 3,272 people.

Transformation Of Community Lives In Malawi (Mchinji) did the same, granting K3M each to 3 CBOs for women's savings, learning materials for 230 children, and youth tailoring, with the balance supporting operations.

They mobilized. We matched. They granted.

That's how a Community Foundation works.

Right now in Lilongwe, 10 of our emerging Community Foundations, under the Mott Foundation funded Community Foundations Development Program, are deep in Business Development training, building the skills to launch enterprises that will fund their own programs and uplift their own communities.

This is what sustainable development actually looks like: communities funding their own future.

Mchepa Village in Lilongwe has been sitting on untapped china clay, iron ore, and silicon oxide.

Not any more;

Mchepa Pottery, project #2 of 19 in Mudzi Connect's 2026 co-investment cycle is changing that. With a new kiln and potter’s wheel, they are turning local soil into "Made in Lumbadzi" ceramics.

Production up 50%, sales are set to double.

6 jobs created, 100+ women clay suppliers now have steady income.

Their idea: Stop importing what we can make at home.
