Youth organisations in Malawi are calling for urgent reforms to ensure young people are fully integrated into governance and development structures. They warn that their current exclusion weakens participatory democracy and undermines inclusive development.
In a joint statement obtained by Times360Malawi, the Phalombe Youth Arms Organisation (PYAO), Youth Initiative for Community Development (YICOD), and All for Youth Malawi express concern that development committees are being reconstituted without meaningful youth representation.
Speaking on behalf of the consortium, PYAO Executive Director Vincent Thom described youth participation as tokenistic, noting that young people lack institutional recognition in Parliament and other key decision-making platforms.
The organisations have urged the government to institutionalise youth mainstreaming. A key part of this, they argue, is allocating at least 15 percent of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to youth priorities, in line with the National Youth Policy.
Thom also called for the formal recognition of the Youth Parliamentary Caucus and the enforcement of a 30 percent quota for youth representation in decision-making structures. "Youth inclusion must move from rhetoric to action," he said.
