❓ Did you know that some of the neglected and underutilized crops (NOCs) are the verge of getting extinct, yet they once played integral to community diets and ecological balance?

But thanks to indigenous communities who are doing their best to safeguard the seeds, which are the source of life and continuity for these crops. Well, something worrying is up; restrictive seed legislation, a silent threat that is stifling their potential.

🌾 What if saving your grandmother’s seeds made you face the law lawsuit?
That’s the reality many African farmers face under current national seed laws.
In our quest for food security, underutilized foods—those nutrient-rich indigenous crops that can thrive in local climates—hold huge promise.

📜 Most seed laws are written to protect commercial seed markets. But they criminalize the informal sharing and saving of indigenous seeds—essentially turning centuries-old community practices into illegal acts.

🚫 That means:
💢 Farmers can’t freely exchange traditional seeds.

💢 Local biodiversity is shrinking.

💢 Climate-resilient crops are disappearing from our fields and plates.

💡 If we truly want sustainable food systems, preserving underutilized foods must start with seed sovereignty and Knowledge. Without it, Africa’s future nutrition and resilience are at stake.
