ADRA Malawi is implementing the Transforming Futures Project in Traditional Authority Njewa, targeting marginalized youth especially adolescent girls, young women, and youth affected by HIV.

We had a great time engaging with the youth, listening to their powerful stories, and learning firsthand about their experiences, challenges, and aspirations. These moments continue to inspire our commitment to supporting young people in meaningful ways.

This initiative is empowering youth with the knowledge, skills, and support they need to lead healthy, equitable lives and actively contribute to positive change in their communities.

150 Flood affected families in Mtumanji, Zomba District, have received essential support from ADRA Malawi following heavy rains that caused the Domasi River to overflow, destroying homes, crops, and household belongings.

Through this intervention, ADRA Malawi distributed non-food items including blankets, mats, plastic buckets, cups, and plates to help families restore basic living conditions and cope with the cold season.

The flooding significantly affected vulnerable households, leaving many without shelter and access to safe water. This assistance is expected to improve immediate living conditions while supporting recovery efforts within the community.

The response was made possible with support from ADRA International ADRA Africa, and the Malawi Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

Today marks a significant milestone in advancing sustainable livelihoods for young people in Mzimba District, as 100 youth successfully graduated under the Green Jobs for Adolescents and Youth Project.

Through a consortium led by Save the Children Malawi in partnership with ADRA Malawi, Mzuzu University, CRECCOM, Emerge Livelihoods, and TEVETA, the project has focused on building skills that matter skills that respond to real environmental and economic challenges.

From climate-smart agriculture to renewable energy solutions and ecotourism opportunities, these young people are now equipped to turn knowledge into action. Their training journey blended theory with hands-on experience, business incubation, and exposure to real workplaces preparing them to either enter employment or create their own enterprises.

Behind this milestone is a deeper story of transformation. Many of the graduates started with limited access to opportunities, but today they stand equipped with the confidence and capability to shape their own livelihoods.

Creating sustainable opportunities for young people requires strong partnerships, forward-looking policies, and practical skills that match the demands of a changing world. ADRA Malawi recently joined government officials, development partners, and stakeholders in Lilongwe for a national dissemination workshop that focused on advancing green jobs and skills development for adolescents and youth in Malawi.

The engagement is part of the Green Jobs for Adolescents and Youth Project, a collaborative initiative funded by Save the Children Italy and running from June 2023 to May 2026 in Ntcheu and Mzimba districts. The project is implemented through a consortium of partners including Save the Children Malawi, ADRA Malawi, CRECCOM, Mzuzu University, TEVETA, and Emerge Livelihoods, combining expertise in community engagement, technical skills training, certification, and youth entrepreneurship support.

The workshop was graced by Joseph Chirombo, Director of Assessment and Certification Services in the Ministry of Labour, who applauded the consortium’s commitment to investing in Malawi’s young people and promoting sustainable livelihoods. He stressed the need to equip youth with relevant and market-responsive skills that can help close the widening gap between the number of young people entering the labour market and the limited opportunities available in the formal sector.

Through initiatives like this, ADRA Malawi continues to support efforts that empower young people to build resilient livelihoods while contributing to environmental sustainability. By strengthening skills, encouraging innovation, and fostering collaboration among partners, the project is helping pave the way for a more inclusive and sustainable economic future for Malawi’s youth.
