*LLGG Purpose:* An organized citizen environmental action group working towards a thriving, abundant, green, and sustainable Lilongwe City through coordinated advocacy, action, and oversight.

*Functions in brief:*
1. Monitor & report
4. Take action.
5. Contribute to LCC planning

LLGG is open to anyone passionate and serious. LLGG currently has ~100 people from ~55 organizations (gov, ngo,

groups, and individuals) who are passionate about greening our city. LLGG started in 2017 when Permaculture Network in Malawi members contacted the LCC’s health and sanitation department to suggest role-modelling environmental practices through their staff, which at the time were sweeping and burning leaves. In 2018 the interaction expanded to designs for water harvesting and greening, which then expanded into the current green team. LLGG has a terms of reference that liaises with the LCC’s Lilongwe City Environmental Working Group and focuses on high-level advisory services, whereas the LLGG assists on coordinating and action. We use the information to create a stakeholder map to see who is doing what and where. The LLGG aims for representation and coordination with all 27 wards. We also follow advice on improving LCC activities from their guiding documents. Anyone can view the member map and search through it. There are instructions on the website on how to use it:

The Malawi University of Business And Applied Sciences (MUBAS), in collaboration with the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Green Impact Technologies, is implementing a research project aimed at increasing access to clean energy in Malawi through the use of smart technologies. The project is funded by the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST–Malawi) and is being implemented as a joint initiative with Rwanda.

An opportunity has arisen within the project to recruit a postgraduate research student (MSc or MPhil) who is registered with MUBAS and whose research interests align with clean energy and smart technology. The selected student will join the research team as a Research Assistant and will be required to utilize data generated from the project toward the development of their thesis.

The project will provide a studentship allowance and cover costs related to data collection. The engagement period for the student will be a minimum of one year.

For further information, contact Dr. Suzgo Kaunda via [email protected]

Meet the striped leaf-nosed bat (Macronycteris vittata) πŸ¦‡

We caught two individuals of this striking species during a survey last week in at Kumbali Game Reserve , only our third record of M. Vittata in Malawi πŸ™Œ

This is a large, insect-eating bat that forages in cluttered woodland and forest edges, using powerful echolocation to hunt beetles and other hard-bodied insects. It follows that up with quite a fiesty attitude!
