Today, the Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC) commenced a one-week training in Advocacy and Proposal Development for Women and Girls-Led Organizations, with support from Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi - fawema Ecorys UK, and Women & Girls Fund.
The training aims to strengthen the capacity of women and girls-led organizations to effectively advocate for policies and laws that promote gender equality and women's rights, while also equipping them with the skills to design and write competitive, award-winning proposals.
Speaking during the opening session, the Executive Director of FAWEMA emphasized that the training seeks to empower women and girls to actively engage in policy advocacy and support the implementation of laws that address gender inequality. He further highlighted that the Proposal Development component, together with the Women and Girls Fund initiative, is designed to increase access to funding opportunities for women and girls-led organizations, particularly in the current shrinking resource environment.
Through this initiative, participating organizations will gain practical knowledge and tools to influence change, mobilize resources, and strengthen their contribution to advancing the rights and empowerment of women and girls across Malawi. 📢 Strengthening Service Delivery Through Accountability and Citizen Engagement
The Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC) recently facilitated a Sector-Specific Service Charters Validation Meeting at Thope Lodge in Dowa District. The consultative meeting brought together representatives from Dowa District Council sector units to review and validate updated service charters.
The process provided an opportunity for sector units to reaffirm and update their commitments regarding the services they provide to the public, in line with ongoing public sector reforms aimed at improving service standards, accountability, transparency, and responsiveness.
Service charters are an important tool for promoting quality service delivery as they clearly outline the rights and expectations of citizens, as well as the standards and commitments that public institutions pledge to uphold.
MHRRC remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen governance, enhance citizen participation, and improve access to quality public services for all.

Mob violence has never been the answer. We believe in justice — and justice means a fair trial, due process, and respect for human life. Life is sacred. Think before you act. We cannot stay silent while innocent people are hunted and killed over superstition and false beliefs. The violence in Nsanje and Chikwawa is heartbreaking. Eight lives have already been lost due to baseless allegations. This must stop.
Human life is sacred. Mob justice is not justice.
We urge everyone to:
• Not take the law into their own hands
• Report suspicions to the authorities
• Be the voice of reason in their community
• Protect human dignity and life
We call for justice.
We call for accountability.
We call for humanity.

📢 MHRRC Launches Mobile Technology to End GBV in Karonga
On 8th May 2026, the Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC), in partnership with Danchurchaid in Malawi (DCA) and Norwegian Church Aid Malawi (NCA) Malawi and Inspire Learn officially launched the Mobile Technology to End Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Project in Karonga District.
The project is designed to tackle Technologically Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) while leveraging mobile technology to improve access to critical information and services for GBV survivors.
Speaking during the launch, Karonga District Commissioner, Mr. Mwambo, emphasized the importance of conducting a baseline study to inform effective implementation. He also encouraged community members to actively engage with the initiative by registering and using the mobile platform by dialing *4274 #.
This innovative approach marks a significant step towards creating safer communities by ensuring that survivors can access support services quickly, safely, and confidentially.

Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC), in partnership with SPRODETA, supported 60 gender-based violence (GBV) survivors from Tas Kyungu, Kilupula and Wasambo in Karonga, with entrepreneurship and soap-making skills.
At MHRRC, we believe that economic empowerment is a critical pathway to healing, dignity, and long-term resilience for GBV survivors. By equipping women with practical business skills, we are supporting them to rebuild their lives and provide for their families.
We remain committed to working with partners, communities, and government structures to ensure that survivors are not only protected—but also empowered.
This initiative is part of the Pamoza Advocacy for Social Justice and Building Resilience for Vulnerable Populations projects, funded by Norwegian Church Aid and DanChurch Aid.

Last week, the Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC) empowered citizen journalists in Karonga with essential skills in storytelling and news article writing. 📝✨
This training aims to strengthen their ability to amplify powerful community voices and highlight real stories of impact and change especially on critical issues such as gender-based violence (GBV), child marriage, and other development challenges affecting their communities.
By equipping local journalists with these skills, MHRRC is helping ensure that community experiences are not only heard, but also influence action, accountability, and positive transformation.

On Friday, we convened at Chikho Hotel with Norad partners receiving funding through NCADCA Norwegian Church Aid Malawi, and Danchurchaid in Malawiengaging media practitioners on the powerful synergies between GBV prevention and response, fighting inequalities in mining communities, and economic empowerment.
The discussion highlighted how these interconnected issues shape the lives of women, men, and young people and the critical role the media plays in driving awareness, accountability, and change.
We called on media houses and media practitioners to:
• Uphold survivor-centred and ethical reporting on GBV
• Go beyond events to unearth critical and systemic issues fueling inequality and violence
• Use their platforms to amplify community voices and promote justice and accountability
Together, responsible media engagement can accelerate efforts towards safer, more equitable, and economically empowered communities.
