SEMINARIANS INTENSIFY THEIR DIACONATE PREPARATIONS WITH A RETREAT:Chosen to Heal, Called to Serve
By Fr. Amos Katumbi
As the Church in Malawi prepares for the 2026 Diaconate Ordination at St. Peter’s Major Seminary in Zomba, hearts are united in prayer and gratitude for these seminarians who have courageously responded to God’s call to service as they start their retreat scheduled from today Sunday 17th May 2026 to Friday 22nd May 2026 at M’phaludzu Retreat Centre.
Their retreat is not simply a period of spiritual preparation, but a sacred journey of inner formation, emotional growth, and psychosocial transformation. In silence and prayer, these young men are allowing God to shape them into servants capable of carrying the joys, fears, wounds, and hopes of His people.
In a society burdened by poverty, anxiety, broken relationships, depression, and spiritual emptiness, the Church continues to need ministers who can offer not only the Gospel from the altar, but also compassion, listening hearts, encouragement, and healing presence to those who suffer silently.
The Diaconate is therefore a ministry of both faith and humanity a calling to stand beside the weak, comfort the grieving, guide the lost, and restore dignity to the forgotten. As these candidates prepare to take their Oath of Fidelity on Friday evening at St. Peter's Major Seminary, they symbolically surrender themselves to become instruments of Christ’s mercy and servants of the Church with humility and faithfulness.
Under the guidance of the Ordaining Minister, the Right Reverend Yohane Suzgo Nyirenda, Bishop of the Diocese of Mzuzu, the faithful are invited to accompany Peter Wandale, Wyson John(Archdiocese of Blantyre) Levison Lockie, Felix Phiri, (Diocese of Chikwawa), George Kantiki, (Diocese of Dedza), Archangel Chikankheni, Innocent Panamba,(Archdiocese of Lilongwe), Timothy Phiri, (Mangochi Diocese), Antony Kavinya, Stuart Munthali, (Diocese of Mzuzu), Effort Emmanuel Chakuuma, (Diocese of Zomba), Maya Zangalama, and Pempho Lovemore Mbewe, (Franciscan Capuchin Order of Friars Minor), with prayers and support as they approach this sacred step.
May their lives become living testimonies of hope, emotional resilience, servant leadership, and God’s healing love for the people of Malawi and the universal Church.
