As we reflect on Earth Day, the question is not only what needs to be done, but who is already doing the work—and how can we support them better?

In Nkhoma, the Madzumbi VNRMC is demonstrating what it truly means to move from awareness to action.

This community structure is championing mountain ecosystem restoration through practical, visible efforts:

Restoring degraded landscapes through tree planting and natural regeneration

Mobilizing community members around sustainable land management

Protecting vital ecosystem services that directly support local livelihoods

What stands out is not just the activity—but the ownership. The work is rooted in local knowledge, collective responsibility, and a clear understanding that healthy ecosystems are the foundation for resilience.

At a time when global conversations on climate and biodiversity can feel distant, Madzumbi VNRMC reminds us that real impact is happening on the ground—driven by communities who are closest to the challenges and solutions.

TREE PLANTING LAUNCHED AT MTANDA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Conservation Arts Malawi is pleased to announce the successful launch of our 2,000-tree planting initiative targeting primary schools around Nkhoma Mountain.

The exercise officially kicked off at Mtanda Primary School, where we planted a total of 250 trees. The species planted include 75 Mtangatanga, 50 Kesha wa maluwa, 50 Msambafumu, and 75 Mbawa. This marks an important step in our efforts to restore and protect the environment around Nkhoma Mountain.

We sincerely thank the teachers, the Environmental Club members, and the entire school community for warmly welcoming the initiative and actively participating in the planting exercise. Your commitment shows that together, we can make a lasting impact.

Special appreciation goes to Mr. Ernest Williams the environmental club Coordinator at the school, for his support and commitment to continued collaboration. We look forward to working together in nurturing and protecting the planted trees.

This activity is being implemented under the Mountain Guardians Project around Nkhoma Mountain with financial support from the Malawi Environmental Endowment Trust (MEET).

Together, we are raising young environmental stewards and building a greener future.

Mountain Guardians Project Launched at Nkhoma Hikers Festival

On 2 November 2025, Conservation Arts launched the Mountain Guardians Project during the Nkhoma Hikers Festival in Lilongwe District. The initiative aims to protect Nkhoma Mountain from threats like illegal logging, charcoal burning, and overgrazing, which endanger local water sources, biodiversity, and livelihoods. The festival featured cultural performances, a summit hike, climate discussions, and community engagement activities. Local youth and forestry officials urged collective action for conservation to ensure environmental health and sustainable eco-tourism. Supported by Malawi Environment Endowment Trust and in partnership with Movement for Environmental Action, the project unites communities to restore and safeguard this vital ecosystem
