Holiday is over! But are human rights being protected in Salima?
At Citizen Alliance, we envision that every human being in Malawi has to enjoy his or her rights. We are thrilled to have started the year on a high note as we have rescued two adolescent girls from early marriages. Oliver Majawa, a 13-year-old girl, has withdrawn from Mbilira CDSS due to a pregnancy allegedly perpetrated by a HSA of Makiyoni Health Centre. Another girl, Ester Phiri - 14 years of age is on the verge of withdrawing from school - standard 8 at Thavite Primary School as a result of being impregnated by her own step brother, Mphatso Malida.
Through follow-ups, which we had in TA Mwanza and Khombedza, we’ve seen how adolescent girls are being deprived of their rights, even by their own close relations. Just by being found pregnant, mothers either force their girls to marry the owner of the pregnancy, or connive with the perpetrators not to report the vice - particularly if the latter is way too old than the girl.
