Trees play a significant role in mitigating climate change by acting as carbon sinks. They absorb carbon dioxide (COβ‚‚) from the atmosphere and convert it into organic matter, which is then stored in their wood, leaves and roots. This natural process helps reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, thus contributing to global cooling.
A fully grown tree can absorb and store a larger amount of carbon over its lifespan than younger ones. Mature forests are the most effective carbon sinks, capable of absorbing and storing a vast amount of COβ‚‚ and helping sustain a healthier planet for future generations.
Reforestation and afforestation efforts are critical strategies in the fight against climate change. Planting trees not only increases carbon sequestration but also restores ecosystems and promotes biodiversity.
Approximately 97%-98% of Malawi's population is dependent on forests for energy; hence, the alarming rates of deforestation and climate crisis. A shift into better, safer and healthier alternative sources of cooking saves us greatly.
SIDE NOTE:
RURAL VS. URBAN; While reliance on wood is nearly 100% in rural areas, roughly 54%-75% of urban households also rely on firewood or charcoal for cooking.
ENERGY DEFICIT; Despite efforts to shift to modern energy, only about 10%-15% of the population has access to this modern energy, as it is expensive, forcing the vast majority to continue using wood.
PROJECTIONS; Demand is still high and unmet. Demand for biomass is expected to continue to outpace supply, with projections indicating that forest resources will not be able to meet demand by 2030.
What does this all mean? even if we double the efforts now, the damage has been done and continues. The trees we are planting now will have an effect in 7-10 years from now. The ones we are cutting? we are and continue facing the consequences of our actions.

It's not about one person planting thousands of trees to make a change; it's about every person planting one within their reach, conserving it, and watching it grow. It is not easy for someone who has planted a tree to go their way and cut it, and it is pretty much easier for someone who has not planted a tree to cut it. We all need to take action and give back to nature. 🌳 🌳

These kids attended the environmental conservation session, trained on how trees are planted, were sent out with one each, and planted them at their homes with supervision. As they grow, they will understand what they need to value to keep them safe. 🌳🌳🌱

Mudzi cooking project works closely with local communities, as the name states *MUDZI* in your language, *COMMUNITY*.

When I started environmental work in 2019, Malawi had little to non existing Young people and organizations fighting for climate justice and thriving for sustainability, as of 2026 we have countless young people and organizations that have been established over the past five years. I would like to call on young people and organizations to target the rural areas just as much as they are doing with the urban areas. Mudzi entirely works with rural communities, as we understand that the production area for charcoal and firewood is in rural communities.
Mudzi is trying to bridge the gap by helping rural communities establish small scale businesses, providing women with safe, clean cooking. So that they do not see or feel the need of burning charcoal and cutting down trees for survival.

The efforts others are putting in providing sustainable means to shift from using charcoal and firewood doesn't go unnoticed, however cutting the production of charcoal in the rural areas remains the priority for Mudzi. If charcoal production is cut, people in the urban areas will be left with no choice but adopt to using these alternatives hence automatically reducing deforestation and combating climate change as deforestation is one of the *MAJOR* causes of climate change in Malawi.

As efforts are put in planting and conserving trees, rural communities are putting double the efforts in cutting and burning trees for firewood and charcoal, because they have zero knowledge on issues concerning climate change, some do have knowledge but they need to survive on selling and using charcoal and firewood.

The Mudzi efficient stove was a tool established suitably for the rural settings. It was designed to suit the rural areas, Mudzi was established to provide sense of ownership and help the communities understand it was made to save and empower them.πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯🌳🌳🌳

Need more oxygen?

It is that time of the season, where you get all the chances in the world to make and be the change you want to see. Malawi has 22 million people, imagine if each one of us had just planted a single tree, conserve it and watch it grow?

We are talking of millions of well protected and conserved healthy trees, Would climate change be an issue at all?

One tree, one life.

Not so much needs to be done, It just takes the chance of you wanting to be part of the change that you want to see.

2000 trees distributed and ready for planting.🌳🌳🌎🌍

Building a generation of climate activists.Young people like them need to lead the way. Your voice, your actions, and your ideas matter. You’re not too young to make a difference.

Let’s learn together, speak up, and take action because the future is in your hands".

Climate change is not a future problem. It’s happening now. But with action, courage, and cooperation, we can shape what comes next." 🌳🌳🌱🌱🌎🌎

INVEST IN YOUR MIND AND KNOWLEDGE

In the face of accelerating climate change, the value of investing in human-mind through education, research and knowledge sharing has never been more critical, especially in the field of agriculture, where efficient irrigation practices must evolve rapidly to meet the challenges of water scarcity, shifting weather patterns and unpredictable rainfall. Building climate resilience starts not only with technology and infrastructure but, more importantly, with informed minds. The challenges posed by climate change are vast, but so too is the potential of the human mind. By prioritizing education, research and knowledge sharing in the field of irrigation, societies can build resilient agricultural systems that not only withstand the shocks of climate change but also thrive despite them. True climate action begins with an investment not just in tools and technologies, but in the people who will use them.

SECURING FOOD AND COMBATING HUNGER

As Mudzi Cooking Project we noticed through some of our beneficiaries that access to clean cooking alone is not enough, there must also be food to cook. This can be achieved by supporting small-scale farmers with training tools and seeds to increase local food production. Promote climate-resilient agriculture that can withstand droughts, floods etc.

Farmers, policymakers, reseachers and engineers need continuous access to updated knowledge on

1. Understanding local and global climate trends.

2.Mastering water-efficient irrigation technologies( drip irrigation, moisture sensors and solar-powered pumps)

3.Learning adaptive farming practices and crop selection suited to changing environments.

Therefore, by combining clean energy, smart agriculture and community empowerment, we can save both the Ps; PEOPLE and PLANET🌍πŸͺ΅πŸŒ³πŸ”₯
