Yesterday at Bingu National Stadium, history was not only written on the scoreboard—but in the hearts of the people.
Following a spirited match between the Burundi U-17 and Malawi U-17 teams, which ended in a 2–1 victory for Burundi, a remarkable moment unfolded.

A group of Burundian supporters had arranged for Amahoro drummers to perform after the game. What began as a celebration quickly transformed into something far greater.
In a powerful and unexpected display of unity, both Malawian and Burundian fans came together—dancing, celebrating, and sharing joy—proving that sport may bring competition, but culture builds bridges.

As Amahoro drummers, with 99% of our members born in exile, we hold a deep and genuine connection to Malawi as our second home. When these two nations meet, we do not choose sides—we stand for both. We represent peace, shared identity, and the enduring strength of cultural expression.

The lesson is clear:

CONDOLENCE MESSAGE FROM AMAHORO DRUMMERS

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that Amahoro Drummers extend our sincere condolences to the families, friends, colleagues, and loved ones of the five members of the Hive Band who tragically lost their lives in a road accident.

This painful loss is not only a blow to artist Eli Njuchi and the Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM), but also to the entire Malawian music and creative industry, and indeed the nation as a whole. These young artists carried promise, talent, and a future that was still unfolding.

We also respectfully acknowledge and commend the Government of Malawi, under the leadership of His Excellency President Peter Mutharika, for the compassionate decision to cover the funeral expenses. Such a gesture reflects solidarity and recognition of the vital role artists play in shaping national identity and culture.

In this moment of mourning, we stand in unity with the Malawian artistic community. May the families find strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time, and may the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.
As cultural practitioners ourselves, we reaffirm our commitment to honoring life, art, and legacy through responsible and dignified cultural expression.

BOXING DAY — A CELEBRATION ROOTED IN AFRICAN TRADITION

As we mark Boxing Day, we reflect on its meaning through the lens of long-standing Burundian and African customs, traditions that existed long before modern interpretations.

In Burundian communities, the spirit of Boxing Day is well understood through the symbol of the Agaseke (traditional basket). Almost every weekend—especially in villages—people visit siblings, relatives, and friends not empty-handed, but carrying a basket filled with gifts, often fresh from the farm.
Importantly, the basket never returns empty; it is refilled with other gifts, reinforcing reciprocity, respect, and unity. This practice is especially upheld among women and girls.

For men, visits are traditionally accompanied by a pot of local wine, whether made from sorghum (amasaka) or banana (urwarwa)—a symbol of friendship, hospitality, and brotherhood.
This deep cultural wisdom is well captured in the Kirundi proverb:
“Iminywe iryoha inyuranye ".
A reminder that sharing strengthens unity, and that diversity—like different fingers tasting differently—adds richness to community life.

Despite living as refugees—and fully aware of the financial challenges that status can bring—we made a deliberate choice not to perform for money or wealth, but for dignity, pride, and cultural responsibility.
Our purpose has always been to defend, preserve, and showcase the richness of Burundi’s royal drum heritage, while presenting a positive, dignified image of refugees to the world.

Today, 99% of our members were born in exile. This reality has shaped our values. We operate as a non-profit cultural organization, driven by service rather than profit.

For our performances, we simply request transport, food, accommodation, and any reasonable allowance to support the team. Despite delivering high-profile, professional performances, we remain accessible—allowing institutions, communities, and individuals to book us at minimal cost.
