Today is World Day Against Human Trafficking.

At Hope Risen Foundation Malawi, we stand in solidarity with survivors and frontline defenders across the globe, working tirelessly to combat this grave injustice.

We’re excited to mark this important day with a series of impactful activities:

This morning, our team is on the ground conducting awareness campaigns and prevention education in our local communities—empowering people with the knowledge to recognize and resist trafficking.

This afternoon, our Team Leader, Patience Phiri, has been invited to speak at a powerful webinar hosted by the Africa Survivor Coalition, themed:

"Unity as Protection against Organized Crime: Survivor-Led Action Against Human Trafficking."

We believe that true change begins when survivors are heard, valued, and leading the movement.

Finally, we’ll be releasing an official press statement this evening, reinforcing our call for collective action, accountability, and survivor-centered solutions across Africa.

Today is a reminder that every voice, every action, and every survivor matters. Join us in saying NO to human trafficking and YES to unity, justice, and freedom.

Exciting News!

I am thrilled to share that I have successfully completed the Stakeholder Engagement for UNTOC course and earned my certification! This journey has deepened my understanding of the intersection between human trafficking, smuggling of persons, and organized crime, equipping me with valuable tools to drive meaningful change in the fight against modern-day slavery.

As a survivor and advocate, I believe that collaboration is key in dismantling criminal networks and protecting vulnerable communities. This certification reinforces my commitment to strengthening multi-stakeholder engagement, policy advocacy, and survivor-centered approaches in tackling these global challenges.

A huge thank you to the facilitators, fellow participants, and everyone who continues to support my mission with Hope Risen Foundation, Africa Survivor Coalition, and beyond. This is another step forward in my pursuit of justice, awareness, and action!

We are deeply grateful to the Institute for Healing of Memories for inviting our team of survivors to a powerful three-day workshop at the breathtaking Chongoni Mountains in Dedza. This experience has been nothing short of transformative!

Through insightful sessions and meaningful reflections, we have gained invaluable lessons on healing, resilience, and trauma-informed approaches. The knowledge and skills we have acquired will not only help us in our personal journeys but also strengthen our work in supporting fellow survivors.

As we return to our communities, we are committed to implementing these lessons in our day-to-day advocacy, survivor empowerment programs, and support initiatives at Hope Risen Foundation. The tools we now carry will help us foster deeper healing, create safe spaces for others, and continue the fight against human trafficking with renewed strength and purpose.

Thank you once again, Institute for Healing of Memories, for this life-changing opportunity!

What Are Protective Behaviours?

🔑 Protective behaviours are strategies to help people feel and stay safe in any situation. These tools empower us to:

✅ Recognize when we feel unsafe.
✅ Identify who to talk to when we need support.
✅ Develop resilience by setting and respecting boundaries.

🌟 Example: Imagine a child learning to trust their instincts when approached by someone unfamiliar. Teaching them protective behaviours ensures they know they have the right to feel safe and can seek help from a trusted adult.

🔗 Let’s start the conversation about making safety a priority for everyone.

STATEMENT FROM THE DIRECTOR OF HOPE RISEN FOUNDATION

January 17, 2025

The Hope Risen Foundation expresses its unwavering support for the Honourable Minister of Labour, Vitumbiko Mumba, in his courageous stand against the inhumane labour conditions uncovered at NT Plastics Manufacturing Ltd. The exploitation and abuse of Malawian workers at the hands of this company are not only a violation of national labour laws but also a gross affront to human dignity.

As an organization dedicated to combating labour trafficking and exploitation, we are deeply shocked and outraged by the treatment of the workers at this facility. The blatant disregard for the Honourable Minister’s order to halt operations reflects a troubling level of contempt for the rule of law and the basic rights of Malawi’s labour force.

We commend the Honourable Minister for his decisive action in ordering the closure of the company and his subsequent efforts to enforce accountability by ensuring the arrest of the individual responsible. This sends a strong message that labour exploitation will not be tolerated in Malawi and that violators will face the full force of the law.

At Hope Risen Foundation, we believe that every worker deserves fair treatment, safe working conditions, and respect for their rights as enshrined in Malawi’s Constitution and labour laws. The actions of NT Plastics Manufacturing Ltd highlight the urgent need for stronger enforcement mechanisms to protect workers from exploitation, particularly by foreign entities operating within our borders.

We stand in solidarity with the exploited workers and call on all stakeholders, including the government, civil society, and the private sector, to work together to eradicate labour injustices. Let this incident serve as a wake-up call to strengthen labour inspections, enforce compliance with the law, and hold perpetrators accountable without fear or favour.

Hope Risen Foundation remains committed to supporting the Honourable Minist
