UMODZI YOUTH CLUB PROMOTES BACK TO SCHOOL CAMPAIGN
With schools set to start on 11
September 2023, a group of youths under the banner of Umodzi Youth Club in Chikwawa has embarked on a back-to-school campaign to eradicate illiteracy in rural areas.
Chairperson for the grouping Andrew Chaora told ProjectM that most children in remote areas, particularly girls fail to go to school due to lack of learning materials such as text books, pens, school uniforms and other essentials.
He said following this most of them are forced into relationships by their parents, causing high dropout rates and early marriages in the district.
As a beacon of hope guiding the youths towards a brighter future the group has assisted the most vulnerable boys and girls totaling 12 at Namalindi Primary School with basic school needs such as notebooks, pencils, pens and school uniforms.
‘’Access to education in vulnerable communities is a big challenge for children in poverty .We aim to provide children from underprivileged communities with the necessary learning materials in a bid to provide a friendly and practical solution to those who are struggling. Children in this area have suffered enormous setbacks in their learning while their dreams have been put on hold. By donating items such as school bags, school uniforms, pens and notebooks you can help children reclaim their right to a bright future,’’ Chaora said.
He has told us that for a back-to-school supporting initiative to succeed there is a need for collaborative efforts among all stakeholders to raise their voices in unity about the importance of education to address basic needs and rights of children that are facing significant obstacles which can stop them from pursuing their dreams.
He has appealed for monetary contributions and learning materials from well-meaning Malawians at home and abroad including private institutions to achieve their goals.
On his part, Group Village Head Salumenji said lack of learning materials among vulnerable children in his area remains a big challenge which he said needs a collaboration between different partners to end the vice.
The Traditional leader says a developed community can only be achieved if it has educated people.
He, therefore, called on everyone in the district to support the back-to-school campaign by helping poor children with learning materials so that they become architects of the future.
Established in 2021, Umodzi Youth Club has a total number of 12 active members.
