๐ค Putting English into practice.
Our first CMLD ESL Summer Programme came to an end in early September with a role-play debate organised by our volunteer ESL teacher, Peter #.
The question was:
Should a festival in Cape Maclear go ahead?
Heavy rains had made the road difficult, with cars and trucks getting stuck, including trucks carrying equipment for the festival.
The students were split into two teams, and each team held its own debate. They explored both sides of the question, from the risks of traveling in difficult conditions to the importance of the festival for local livelihoods.
They also took on roles as reporters and local business owners, interviewing each other and giving short speeches promoting their own Cape Maclear businesses, all in English.
Our form 4 students, who had been taking their own ESL lessons, helped the form 1 - 3 students develop their arguments and prepare for the debates
CMLD trustees Ethel and Kate joined the session too, meeting the students and seeing the programme in action.
It was fantastic to see our students speaking, listening, questioning, answering, debating, and sharing their ideas all in English.
A huge thanks to Peter for giving his time to CMLD and bringing so much energy and creativity to the programme ๐
