Sustainable Cape Maclear

Sustainable Cape Maclear Empowerment of the local community of Cape Maclear by home stays, workshops and dinners with local f project. The C.M.C.T. project exists for the local community.

In 2015 UNESCO gave a workshop in Cape Maclear about sustainable tourism in World Heritage Sites. The workshop inspired Alan Joffe (owner Mgoza Lodge) to set up the Cape Maclear Community Tourism (C.M.C.T.) Currently the local community of Cape Maclear is not directly involved in tourism. This project will try to help the local community to benefit from tourism. By tourists staying in traditional

home stays and observing traditionally women’s activities such as grinding maize, cooking and pot making. Or observing or taking part in male activities such as; fishing, mending nets, painting/carving lessons and paper making activities. Cape Maclear is a bay in the Southern part of Malawi and the area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its abundance of endemic cichlid fish species. Of which there is an estimated population of around 15.000. Considering the size of Cape Maclear, this is an extremely high number. This small bay side beach village is famous for its fishing.
