CIRA SENSITIZES LILONGWE DEAF COMMUNITY ON CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY OPPORTUNITIES

By Isaiah Mkwaila | MANAD correspondent

The Construction Industry Regulatory Authority (CIRA), formerly known as the National Construction Industry Council (NCIC), conducted an awareness and sensitization session for members of the Lilongwe Deaf Community on Sunday, 7 June 2026, at Lilongwe Christian Primary School.

The session was facilitated by Engineer Wellington Mandowa from CIRA, who educated participants on the Authority's mandate and the various services and opportunities available within the construction industry.

During his presentation, Engineer Mandowa explained that CIRA regulates and promotes professionalism in different areas of construction, including road construction, carpentry, bricklaying, electrical installation, and other related trades. He emphasized the importance of skills development as a pathway to self-employment, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment.

Participants were informed about training opportunities available through institutions such as Lilongwe Technical College and CIRA. The training covers various construction-related disciplines, including road construction, building, and electrical works.

Engineer Mandowa highlighted that applicants sponsored through the Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA) can access the training free of charge. For those applying directly through CIRA, the training fees are MK600,000 for men and MK300,000 for women.

The training programmes are offered through two learning modes: weekday classes (Monday to Friday) and weekend classes. The training duration is twelve months, and successful candidates will receive certificates upon passing the required examinations.

Mandowa further encouraged members of the Deaf Community to actively pursue opportunities within the construction sector, noting that the industry offers significant potential for employment, self-investment, and business development. He also emphasized the importance of forming groups or companies to undertake construction projects and contribute to national development.

The session underscored CIRA's commitment to promoting inclusive participation in the construction industry and empowering women, youth, and persons with disabilities through quality skills training and professional development.

The Deaf Community welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn about career and business prospects available in the construction sector.

RAILWAY SAFETY AWARENESS SESSION FOR THE DEAF COMMUNITY

On Saturday, a Railway Safety Awareness Session was conducted for members of the Blantyre Deaf Community who gathered at HHI Primary School.

During the session, participants were educated on the dangers of walking along railway tracks, consuming alcohol near or on railway lines, and using mobile phones while on or near the tracks. These risky behaviors can lead to serious accidents, resulting in severe injuries or loss of life.

The awareness campaign emphasized the importance of adhering to railway safety regulations at all times in order to protect lives and prevent avoidable accidents.

The meeting was facilitated by Isaiah Mkwaila, Social Monitor at Nacala Logistics, who encouraged participants to become ambassadors of railway safety within their communities.

How a Deaf Young Man is Building a Better Life Through Wreaths

By Stephano Oswini – MANAD Correspondent

In the quiet communities of Karonga, a young Deaf man named Malumbo Kaonga is proving that disability is not inability. Through determination, creativity, and hard work, Malumbo has transformed traditional basket weaving into a meaningful business that is changing his life and inspiring others.
Malumbo specializes in making beautiful flower baskets locally known as nkhata. His handcraft skills are exceptional, allowing him to produce different basket designs, including round-shaped nkhata and attractive love-shaped nkhata that are highly appreciated by customers in his community.

According to Malumbo, the journey began at home, where he learned the art of basket weaving from his parents, especially his father. What started as a family skill later became a source of purpose and independence. In 2015, he gained additional knowledge and experience in basket making, which helped him improve the quality of his products and strengthen his business.

Today, the business continues to support his daily life and improve his standard of living. Beyond personal success, Malumbo’s story carries a powerful message about the importance of empowering Deaf people with practical skills. His achievements demonstrate that when Deaf individuals are given opportunities and support, they can become self-reliant, productive, and economically independent members of society.

Malumbo’s determination and creativity continue to inspire many people in the community. His work not only preserves local craftsmanship but also shows that talent and hard work can overcome barriers and create a brighter future.

As MANAD continues advocating for the empowerment of Deaf people across Malawi, stories like Malumbo’s stand as a reminder that skills development can transform lives and open doors to greater opportunities.
