PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT IN MALAWI

WASTE Advisers continues to make strides in implementing the “Plastic Waste Recycling Supply Chain Development in Malawi” through its 'Formalized Livelihood and Organized Waste Systems' (FLOW) project, an initiative aimed at reducing the negative impacts of plastic waste on the environment and communities through recycling and sustainable waste management practices.

The project focuses on establishing waste stocking points in schools and surrounding communities where plastic waste is collected, sorted, and stored before transportation for recycling. Through this initiative, schools are becoming active participants in environmental conservation while promoting responsible waste handling practices among learners and communities.

One of the schools participating in the project is Maranatha Girls Academy, where encouraging progress continues to be made. The pictures highlight plastic waste collected at the school being weighed and prepared for transportation to OG Plastics for recycling.

In a remarkable demonstration of green mobility and environmental sustainability, an Informal Waste Worker transported the collected plastics using a bicycle — showcasing an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach to waste collection and transportation within the recycling value chain.

By connecting schools, communities, informal waste workers, and recycling companies, the project is not only helping to reduce plastic pollution but is also creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods and environmental stewardship.

Together, we can transform plastic waste into value and build a cleaner, greener Malawi.

🌍 Building a Greener Future with Southend International School! ♻️

The journey toward a plastic-free Malawi continues! WASTE Advisers recently visited Southend International School as part of our ongoing orientation for the "Plastic Waste Recycling Supply Chain Development" project.

Our goal is to reduce plastic waste in urban Malawi by turning schools and communities into active collection hubs.

💡 Empowering the Next Generation
The energy at Southend was incredible! We spent the day with a vibrant group of students, focusing on:

• Identification & Separation: Teaching students how to distinguish between different types of plastics to ensure they are ready for recycling.

• Recycle, Don't Discard:
Shifting the mindset from "waste" to "resource" by exploring the various products that can be created from recycled materials.

• Environmental Stewardship: Highlighting the long-term positive impact these habits have on our local environment.

It was inspiring to see such curiosity and passion. These students are ready to lead the way in sustainable waste management!

EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES FOR WASTE SEPARATION & PLASTIC RECOVERY ♻️

The FINILOOP project, implemented by WASTE Advisers and WASTE NL in collaboration with Lilongwe City Council, officially launched ward-level engagement meetings for waste separation at source on 12 May 2026. The energy and commitment from community leaders have been truly inspiring!

FINILOOP aims to train 10,000 households in sustainable waste management practices, including waste separation at source. This won’t be done alone – we’re working hand-in-hand with councillors, block leaders, and community committees across 20 wards in the city.

On Day 1 alone, we reached 9 wards and engaged 138 community leaders. Engaging these leaders is the first step toward door-to-door training for 10,000 households to take place in June. Through these meetings, FINILOOP is laying foundations for cleaner and environmental responsible communities.

Stay tuned for more from FINILOOP!
