Bahasi Community Organisation

Bahasi Community Organisation BAHASI (Bangwe HIV and AIDS Self Help Initiative) is a community organisation based in Bangwe, Malawi.

We were set up in 2004, and on a daily basis provide services to children under five who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS or are themselves suffering the disease and other vulnerable children. We also provide home based care and run support groups to members of our community affected by HIV/AIDS. We also work with the community to raise awareness of environmental degradation and how to counter this.

VOLUNTEERS, WORKERS AND LOCAL COMMUNITY ARE WALKING 64KM FOR BAHASI 28TH-30TH MAY TO RAISE MONEY FOR A BUS!

My name is Tina am from Oban I’m currently in Malawi volunteering at BAHASI, a children’s home near Bangwe that supports children affected by HIV/AIDS by providing them with a safe place to live, access to education, and wider community support programs.

There are 43 children living at BAHASI, and right now getting them to and from school is one of the biggest challenges we face, especially with the ongoing fuel crisis in Malawi. We currently have to hire a bus, which is expensive, unreliable, and too small — often operating over capacity and not always arriving on time because it’s used for other work. Unfortunately, this means some of the children are missing out on school, which directly impacts their education.

Our goal is to raise £50,000 to purchase a safe, reliable bus for BAHASI. This would ensure the children can attend school consistently, as well as take part in activities like swimming on weekends — something they rarely get the chance to do.

WE ARE WALKING 64KM FOR OUR CHILDREN. THIS IS THE BAHASI BIG WALK 2026.

Every school day, the children of BAHASI Orphanage travel to Jacaranda School in an overcrowded hired bus that is too small, too expensive, and increasingly unsustainable. We pay over MWK 2,000,000 every month

In May 2026, BAHASI staff, volunteers, supporters and friends will walk 64 kilometers from Bangwe all the way to Zomba — through Limbe, Mbulumbuzi, and Thondwe — to raise £50,000 for a dedicated school bus. Every step we take is a step toward dignity and safety for 30+ children who deserve better.
Here is how YOU can be part of this: JOIN THE WALK — Are you in Malawi? Walk with us. Get in contact with Mr. Ligola on Whatsapp - 0884960165 or Primrose Taylor -+447488367599 and Tina Bell -+265997441837
